Quakers Take Part in Marathon
Doubleheader
PHILADELPHIA -- The University of
Delaware softball team took part in a pair of marathon
efforts Sunday against the University of Pennsylvania, but
came up on the short end of a 2-1 score in the first game
and tied the Quakers 0-0 in the nightcap.
Penn designated hitter Erin O'Brien
delivered a run-scoring single with one out in the bottom of
the 10th inning in the first game to make a winner of the
Quakers in the non-league game. In the second game, the two
teams battled for 14 innings before the game was declared a
0-0 tie when darkness halted the two hour and 58-minute
contest.
Delaware fell to 6-9-1 on the season
while the Quakers improved to 6-7-1. The tie was the first
for the Blue Hens since playing to a 7-7 tie with Drexel
during the 1995 season and the 14 innings was the longest
game played by the Hens since a 20-inning game vs. Hofstra
in the 2000 America East Tournament.
The Blue Hens banged out eight hits in
the opener, including four extra base hits, but could only
manage a single run in the fifth inning when center fielder
Sarai Lavandero led off the inning with a solo home
run to left field. Delaware left 10 runners on base,
including one in the top of the 10th inning when Laura
Streets doubled with two outs but was stranded when
Melissa Basilio grounded out.
Penn scored its first run in the third
inning when the Quakers connected for three straight
singles, the final one an RBI single from third baseman
Meghan Cowen. The Quakers won the game in the 10th when
Crista Farrell singled with one out, moved to third on a
single by Cowen, then scored on O'Brien's
game-winner.
Penn's Rebecca Ranta picked up the
complete game win while Delaware reliever Becky
Rogers took the loss. Streets collected two hits for the
Hens while first baseman Liz Winslow was 3 for 3 with
two doubles.
Neither team could put across a run in
the second game as Delaware's Jenn Joseph and Penn's
Nicki Borgstadt provided a classic pitcher's duel. Joseph
scattered nine hits and struck out eight while Borgstadt
allowed just four hits and struck out eight. Kristi Hackett
collected three hits for the Quakers. Joseph tied the UD
record for innings pitched in a game set by Krysta
Pidstawski vs. Drexel in 1996 and by Christine Etherington
vs. Bucknell in 1993.
While Delaware never put a runner past
second base, Penn had several chances to score runs. Joseph
struck out Cowen with a runner on third in the sixth inning
and Delaware catcher Laurie Erickson tagged out
Kristi Hackett trying to score from second base on a passed
ball in the eighth. Streets went 2 for 5 in the first game
and was 1 for 6 in the second game, giving her 19 hits in 37
at bats (.513) to start the season.
