St. John's 5, Delaware 3 (Semifinals) East Carolina Tournament - Day
Three
GREENVILLE, NC -- The University of Delaware softball team closed out play at the Pirate Classic at East Carolina University Sunday by defeating Canisius 4-0 before falling to St. John's 5-3 in the semifinals. The Hens (1-5) had lost to Canisius 1-0 in Friday's first round game and had fallen to St. John's 2-1 in Saturday's second round action. Host East Carolina captured the tournament title when St. John's had to forfeit due to travel commitments. Delaware got a big effort in both games from freshman pitcher Lindsay Jones (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee, WI) who hurled a six-hit shutout and struck out 11 batters without issuing a walk in the win over Canisius. She also pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the loss to St. John's, striking out three batters. The Hens entered Saturday's elimination round as the No. 7 seed after posting an 0-4 record through the first two rounds but recorded the upset as they downed No. 2 seed Canisius in the morning game. Jones got the victory on the mound, getting out of a jam in the sixth when the Griffins had runners on first and third with only one out. Delaware got a big effort from the bat of Sarai Lavandero (Clifton/Clifton, NJ), who went 2 for 4 with four RBI. Lavandero, who was the lone UD player named to the all-tournament team, connected on two-run doubles in both the third and seventh innings. Jen Joseph had a double and scored two runs and Laurie Erickson also had a hit for the Blue Hens. In the semifinals, St. John's scored one run in the first and four more in the second inning off Delaware starter Becky Rogers on its way to eliminating the Blue Hens. SJU pitcher Courtney Fitzgerald posted her second win over the Hens in three days as Elena Sainz went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in and two doubles and Linda Reyes added a second inning triple. Freshman Lauren Gardner knocked in two runs with a single for the Blue Hens in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-3 but the rally stopped short. Melissa Basilio added a hit and Brooke May and Erickson each had one hit and scored a run for Delaware. The Hens will continue action next weekend at the Virginia Beach Tournament in Virginia.
