Colonial
Athletic Association Softball Tournament
at Hempstead, NY - Day
One
George Mason 2,
Delaware 1
May 8, 2003
Early Homer Leads
GMU to Win in Opener
HEMPSTEAD, NY - The University
of Delaware softball team fell in the opening game of the
Colonial Athletic Association softball tournament Thursday
afternoon as George Mason's Kim Braxton hit a two-run home
run in the first inning for a 2-1 victory at Hofstra
University Softball Stadium.
Braxton clouted her third homer of the
season with one out in the opening inning to give George
Mason a 2-0 lead and the Patriots held on for the
victory.
No. 3 tournament seed Delaware, which had
a two-game win streak snapped, fell to 20-20-1 on the season
and will play in Friday's elimination game at 10 a.m.
against No. 4 Towson, which lost to top seed and Hofstra 4-2
in Thursday's other first round game. Hofstra and George
Mason will meet in the winner's bracket game Friday at 12:30
p.m. The third game of the day will play played at 3
p.m.
The Patriots, the tournament No. 2 seed,
improved to 30-20 on the season as pitcher Dianna Austin
allowed just four hits for the game and one earned run in
the seventh inning to improve to 12-6. She walked just two
and struck out five.
Delaware starter Jenn Joseph
(12-9) took the loss as she allowed two hits and two
runs in three and a third innings of work. Freshman
Lindsay Jones held George Mason scoreless over the
final two and two-thirds innings of relief.
George Mason got all the runs it needed
in the opening inning. Shortstop and CAA Player of the Year
Stacy James led off the bottom of the first with an infield
single. After Missy Hartman popped out to second base,
Braxton came up and hit her two-run shot. The Patriots
managed just three hits the rest of the way, including a
fifth inning triple by James, but could not score.
Delaware, which lost two of three
meetings to the Patriots during the regular season, scored
its only run in the seventh inning when Lauren
Gardner walked with one out and advanced to second on a
groundout to second by Sarai Lavandero. Gardner then
scored when Joseph lofted a fly ball to right field that
Miranda Fox mishandled for an error. However the rally
ended when Austin struck out pinch-hitter Kinsey
Lowrey to end the game.
The Hens had an opportunity to score a
run in the third inning when Joseph and Jenny Gilkins
collected singles. But shortstop Laura Streets,
Delaware's leading hitter at .343, fouled out to left field
with two outs to end the threat.
