Delaware 5, Penn 1 Delaware 3, Penn 2 March 24, 2002   Amanda Cariello ripped a pinch-hit double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to win it. NEWARK, DE --Amanda Cariello fired a five-hitter in the opener and drove home the game-winner with a two-out pinch-hit double in the bottom of the seventh to complete a doubleheader sweep by University of Delaware over University of Pennsylvania, 5-1 and 3-2, in softball action Sunday afternoon. Cariello ripped a 2-1 pitch just inside the left field line to score Brooke May. May had walked and moved to second when Mandy Welch's pop up to left field was dropped, giving Cariello the chance to win it. Becky Rogers (2-2) picked up the win in relief of Jenn Joseph. Joseph pitched the first six innings before Rogers came on to pitch a scoreless seventh. In the opener, Delaware's bottom of the order accounted for all five runs. The fifth through ninth hitters scored all the runs and accounted for seven of the nine hits, including sophomore Laura Streets' 3-for-3 game. The Blue Hens scored four times in the second inning, with the big hit coming when junior Brooke May drove home two runs with a bases loaded double. Delaware, 6-11 and winners of four of its last five, made it 5-0 when Laurie Erickson broke out of a 2-for-23 slump with an RBI triple to center. Cariello lost her bid for the shutout in the top of the seventh on Erin O'Brien's RBI double to center. Things got interesting when the Quakers (8-14) loaded the bases with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Cariello got Courtney Dilts to ground out to second to end the game. Delaware returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Lehigh at 2:30 p.m. at Delaware Field.
