Delaware 6 La Salle 5 Game 2 - Cancelled (Darkness) April 10, 2002 Melissa Basilio's two-single in the top of the 16th gave Delaware a 6-5 lead. PHILADELPHIA -- Melissa Basilio's two-out RBI single in the top of the 16th inning scored winning pitcher Jenn Joseph as University of Delaware outlasted La Salle, 6-5, in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled after the first game took 3:40 to play. The first game finished at 6:10, not allowing enough daylight for a second game to be played. The game featured 34 hits, 10 errors (seven by La Salle), and 31 stranded runner, 17 by Delaware and 14 by La Salle. It was Delaware's longest game since a 20-inning loss in the America East Tournament at Hofstra in May 2000. Joseph reached first to lead off the top of the 16th when she was hit by a pitch. After pinch-hitter Randi Isaacs struck out, Joseph moved to second on Laura Streets ground out to the right side. Basilio followed with her fourth hit of the day, an RBI single to score Joseph. A native of Pickering, Ontario, Basilio finished the day 4-for-7 with a double. La Salle had taken a 4-0 lead with a run in the second and three more in the third off of starter Amanda Cariello. The Blue Hens (12-13) tied the game with four runs in the top of the fifth, two of those coming in on Brooke May's double. Delaware gained a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh when May singled and moved around to third when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. She scored two batters later oon Liz Winslow's RBI single. However, La Salle, which fell to 8-24 and lost its 16th straight after opening the season 8-8, tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on Jillian Stombach's RBI single with two outs that scored Alexis Schneider, who had doubled. The teams settled into a pitcher's duel from there. Joseph, a freshman from Brandywine, DE who raised her record to 2-5 on the season, hurled the last six innings for Delaware, holding the Explorers to just two hits and two walks, while striking out three. She outdueled La Salle's Gina Madaline, who relieved starter Ali Wood in the sixth. Madeline (3-7) allowed 10 hits and two runs in 10-2/3 innings, while striking out five and walking none. Both teams had its share of opportunities before Delaware broke the tie in the 16th. La Salle had a runner on third base in the 10th and 11th innings and could not score. Delaware stranded a runner at third in the 10th, 12th and 14th and had a runner thrown out at the plate in the 11th. La Salle still did not go quietly in the bottom of the 16th. After Joseph retired the first two batters, Amanda Clark walked. Pinch-runner Kassandra Keating stole second to move into scoring position. However, Sarah Punderson grounded out to shortstop to end the marathon. Delaware travels to Hofstra for a three-game CAA set this weekend.
