Temple 6, Delaware 3 Fairfield 6, Delaware 4 East Carolina Tournament • February 24, 2002  Blue Hens End ECU Tourney 0-5 with Losses to Temple, Fairfield   GREENVILLE, NC -- The University of Delaware softball team completed its three-day trip to the East Carolina Tournament with a pair of losses to Temple and Fairfield Sunday. The Hens, who went 0-5 during the season opening tournament, started the day with a 6-3 loss to Temple in a completion of the game which was halted by darkness Saturday evening in the sixth inning. The Hens, who feature 11 freshmen and sophomores on their 15-player roster, wrapped up the tournament with a 6-4 setback to Fairfield, falling to the Stags for the second time in three days. The Hens' 0-5 start is the team's worst start since it became a varsity sport in 1976. Against Temple, Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the first inning as Mandy Welch led off the game with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Amanda Cariello and Randi Isaacs followed with a sacrifice fly. Temple answered with three runs in the first to take the lead before Delaware's Laura Streets hit an RBI double in the third inning to knot the score at 3-3. The Owls added three more in the fourth for a 6-3 lead before the game was halted in the sixth inning. The game resumed Sunday with the Owls holding down Delaware for two innings to post the victory. Cariello (0-3) suffered the loss for the Hens. The Hens were the first team to score a run against Temple in the Owls' first four games. In the final game of the tournament, the Hens jumped out to a big lead with three runs in the second inning and one more in the third for a 4-0 lead before Fairfield rallied with two in the third and four more in the sixth inning for the victory. The big blow in the pivotal sixth inning for Fairfield was a three-run double by Megan Miller. Delaware scored its four runs on just four hits but were hurt defensively by three errors. Delaware pitcher Becky Rogers (0-2) suffered the loss. Fairfield pitcher Melissa Santos (3-1) earned the win, her second of the tournament vs. Delaware. The Blue Hens will return to action next weekend when they compete at the Dixie Classic at Virginia Beach, VA.
