Fairfield 3, Delaware 1 East Carolina 4, Delaware 0 East Carolina Tournament • February 22, 2002  Blue Hens Drop Two in Season Opener Laurie Erickson had an RBI double vs. Fairfield GREENVILLE, NC -- The University of Delaware softball team opened its 2002 season with a pair of losses at the first day of the East Carolina University Tournament. The Blue Hens (0-2) fell to Fairfield by a 3-1 score in the opener before falling to host East Carolina, 4-0, in the second game. Delaware will continue pool play Saturday at 9 a.m. against UMBC before beginning the elimination round. The tournament concludes on Sunday. Fairfield scored one run in the first inning and two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Delaware battled back to score one run in the bottom of the fourth when catcher Laurie Erickson delivered an RBI double to score Laura Streets, who had singled. The Blue Hens had a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs. However, Fairfield pitcher Melissa Santos struck out Amanda Cariello to end the game. Santos finished with 12 strikeouts in earning the complete game victory. Cariello(0-1) took the loss, striking out seven and walking three. In the second game, freshman Randy Isaacs went 2-for-3 and the freshman pitching duo of Jenn Joseph and Becky Rogers combined to scatter five hits, but it was not to be as the Blue Hens fell to the host Pirates. Joseph (0-1) was tagged with the loss after being relieved in the fifth. Kate Manuse had an RBI double for East Carolina.
