Shutout Streak to 38 Innings
NEWARK, DE -- Junior Susan Dugan fired her first collegiate no-hitter and Kristi O'Connell tossed her second two-hitter in as many days as Delaware (14-5, 4-0 America East) completed a four-game sweep of Vermont, 1-0 and 3-0, in the opening weekend of America East action. Dugan, a transfer from St. Joseph's (PA) and graduate of Rising Sun (MD) High School, allowed just two walks while striking out six in recording the 10th no-hitter in Delaware history. She is the third Blue Hen to fire a solo no-hitter in the program's 25-year history, joining current teammate O'Connell, who has five solo no-hitters at Delaware (including two this season) and Patti Freeman, who fired three in her career. O'Connell (6-4) allowed just two walks and two hits in the first game, while striking out six. Delaware scored the lone run in the second inning when Amanda Cariello, who had led off the inning with a double to right center, scored on a passed ball. Although she didn't need it, Dugan would get more support in the nightcap. Delaware put two runs on the board in the first. With two outs and Krissy Chrisztopulos on first base, Lauren Mark hit a sinking liner to right, which Liza Howrigan misplayed into a triple, scoring the game's first run. Mark wasn't at third for long as the first pitch to the next batter was wild, scoring Mark. Delaware got an insurance run in the sixth when Erin Kelly hit a rocket at a drawn-in infield with the bases loaded. The ball bounced off of second baseman Monica Alessi, which plated Mark, who had singled earlier in the inning to complete a 3-for-3 game. Kelly's hit was the 99th of her collegiate career. With the two shutouts, Delaware has not allowed a run in the last 38 innings. In addition, Dugan (8-1) has allowed just one run in her last 33 innings of work. The Blue Hens, who continue their 10-game homestand with a doubleheader versus Lehigh Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., have won 13 of their last 14. Vermont fell to 4-11, 0-4 in America East play.
