CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Behind a three-run fourth inning in its game with Ohio, the University of Delaware salvaged a split at the University of Virginia Cavalier Classic, dropping to Virginia, 4-1, and defeating Ohio University, 3-2, Friday afternoon.

Delaware dropped the first game of the day to Virginia, 4-1. The Hens had a complete game from senior tri-captain Kristi O' Connell (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel), who gave up four earned runs and seven hits.

Virginia (3-11) broke a 1-1 tie in the top half of the fifth when Kelly McCabe scored on a Meaghan Young sacrifice bunt. The Cavaliers added two more in the inning to score a 4-1 victory.

Delaware defeated Ohio University, 3-2, in its second game of the day. The Hens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when senior tri-captain Erin Kelly (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem) knocked in Melissa Basilio (Pickering, Ont./St. Mary's) and Christy Wilkins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley). Kelly scored on an error by Ohio first baseman Jennifer Schmidt, resulting from a Jennifer Nicolais (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) foul out to Schmidt.

Ohio scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and the seventh, but the Hens held on to a 3-2 victory. Susan Dugan (Newark, DE/Rising Sun) picked up the complete-game victory. She is now 2-1 on the season.

Delaware was sparked by sophomore Mandy Welch (LaPlata, MD/McDonough), who went three for five at the plate in the two games.

Delaware (3-4) will continue to compete in the Virginia Cavalier Classic on Saturday.
