Delaware 10, Lafayette 0 (5 innings) Delaware 8, Lafayette 0 (5 innings) March 9, 2000 O'Connell Hurls No-Hitter; Hens Sweep 'Pards   NEWARK, DE -- Senior Kristi O'Connell (Good Counsel/Elmsford, NY) hurled the fifth no-hitter of her career and tied a school record for career pitching wins in a 10-0 win in the opener and Susan Dugan (Rising Sun, Md. HS) pitched a one-hit shutout in an 8-0 victory in the nightcap as the University of Delaware swept a non-league softball doubleheader from Lafayette Thursday at Delaware Field. The Blue Hens (7-4) ran their win streak to five while Leopards (0-4) remained winless and without a run scored this season. Delaware has now defeated Lafayette 11 times in the last 12 meetings. Both games were stopped in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule. O'Connell (3-3), who also hurled a no-hitter in the season opener vs. LaSalle, allowed just one runner when she hit Liz Lucisano with a pitch in the second inning. O'Connell struck out 13 batters, one shy of the school record, and raised her career record to 45-24, tying the school career record for wins set by Krysta Pidstawski last season. O'Connell now holds six UD career pitching marks. Dugan, a first-year transfer from St. Joseph's, improved to 4-1, allowing just a first inning single to Becky Foley. She walked one and struck out two. Delaware banged out 11 hits in the opener, scoring three runs in the first, four in the second, and three more in the third. Mandy Welch (McDonough/LaPlata, MD) went 3 for 4 and scored three runs while Melissa Basilio (St. Mary's/Pickering, Ontario) knocked in two runs and Erin Kelly (Liberty/Bethlehem, PA) had an RBI triple. In all, eight UD players had at least one RBI. In the nightcap, the Hens scored twice in the first and six times in the fifth to put the game away. Amanda Cariello (St. Mark's HS) knocked in three runs, including two with a double in the fifth, Welch had an RBI triple, and Kelly and 1999 America East Player of the Year Lauren Mark (Ursuline) each had two hits for the game.
