Announces Blue Hen Athletics Sportsmanship
Awards for Winter Sports

NEWARK,
DE -- The University of Delaware athletics
department has announced the winners of
the Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Awards for
the 2004-05 winter athletics season.
Now
in its second year, the Blue Hen
Sportsmanship program honors those
student-athletes who have been outstanding
role models and displayed outstanding
sportsmanship towards their teammates,
coaches, opponents, and game officials.
The spring sports winners will be
announced in June. The fall sports winners
were announced in December. The winners
are selected by the coaching staffs of
each sport.
The
2004-05 winter award recipients are Kyle
Gurkovich (men's swimming and diving),
Meredith Law (women's swimming and
diving), Mike Slattery (men's basketball),
Charlie Williams (men's indoor track and
field), Brittany Wright (women' s indoor
track and field), and Tiffany Young
(women's basketball).
"We
are once again proud to honor these
individuals for their efforts in showing
true sportsmanship throughout the year,"
said University of Delaware Director of
Athletics Edgar N. Johnson. "These special
student-athletes have shown that you can
be an outstanding competitor on the field
and still accomplish your goals with great
character and sportsmanship while showing
respect to your opponents and
officials."
Gurkovich,
a freshman from Piscataway, NJ (Piscataway
High School), was among the team's top
distance freestylers in 2004-05, placing
27th in the 1,650 freestyle and 35th in
the 500 freestyle at the Colonial Athletic
Association Championships in February at
George Mason. His top times for the season
were 4:52.91 in the 500 freestyle,
10:19.25 in the 1,000 freestyle, and
17:05.81 in the 1,650 freestyle.
Law,
a sophomore from Chesapeake, VA
(Nansemond-Suffolk Academy), enjoyed an
outstanding season for the Blue Hen
swimmers, leading the team to a dual
record of 6-4. She placed in the top 10 in
six events during the CAA championships,
including a fifth place finish in the
1,650 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay, a
seventh place finish in the 400 freestyle
relay, eighth place in the 200 freestyle
relay, and ninth place in both the 400
individual medley and 500 freestyle. She
also set a school record in the 800
freestyle relay with a time of
7:35.69.
Slattery,
a senior guard from Philadelphia, PA
(Germantown Academy), capped an
outstanding four-year career as a starting
point guard for the Blue Hen men's
basketball squad, leading the teams to the
CAA quarterfinals and earning third team
All-CAA honors. He scored 9.0 points per
game and led the CAA in assists for the
third straight year with 6.5 per game. A
two-time member of the ESPN The
Magazine/CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic
first team, he became the only player in
CAA history to record over 1,000 points
and dish out over 600 assists in a career.
He was also a three-time team co-captain.
Williams,
a junior from Powhatan, VA (Powhatan HS),
enjoyed an outstanding indoor season for
the Blue Hen track and field team as a
sprinter. He won the 400 meter race at the
Covert/Lehigh Invitational and ran part of
the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team that
won at the Thomson Invitational hosted by
Delaware. He capped the season by placing
13th in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the
IC4A regionals, helping to establish a new
UD school record in a time of 3:17.04
along with Chris Dixon, Pat Henry, and
Phil Smiley. Williams also ran the 11th
fastest UD time in the indoor 400 meters
with a time of 51.15.
Wright,
a sophomore from Voorhees, NJ (Eastern
HS), was the team's top sprinter during
the 2004-05 season, winning the 60 meter
dash at five different meets and winning
the 200 meters three times during the
season. She closed out the season with a
10th place finish in the 500 meters at the
Eastern College Athletic Conference
regional championships and set school
records in the 55 meters (7.20), 60 meters
(7.73), 200 meters (24.45), and 300 meters
(42.49) during the season.
Young,
a senior from Fairfax, VA (Fairfax HS),
led the Blue Hen women's basketball squad
to one of the finest seasons in school
history. She earned third team All-CAA
honors after ranking second on the team in
both scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding
(6.2 rpg) and leading the squad in field
goal shooting (.511) and free throw
shooting (.829). She led the Blue Hens to
a record of 25-6, the CAA regular season
title, a second place finish at the CAA
Tournament, and a berth in the Women's
National Invitation Tournament for the
third time in the last four years.
Delaware's 25 wins was the second highest
total in UD history.
