All-American Sidney Haugabrook Named UD
Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the
Year for 2004-05

-- All-American cornerback Sidney
Haugabrook (right), who started every game
of his career, led the University of
Delaware football team to the 2003
national championship, and became just the
second player in school history to earn
all-conference honors all four years, was
honored as the University's 2004-05
Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the
Year at the annual UD Men's
Intercollegiate Athletics Awards luncheon
Tuesday at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
Haugabrook,
a senior consumer economics major from
Atlanta, GA (Woodward Academy), was among
several Blue Hen student-athletes who were
honored at the luncheon for their
performances on the playing field, in the
classroom, and in the community over the
past season.
The
Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award is
selected from a vote of the head coaches
of Delaware's 11 men's intercollegiate
sports. Haugabrook becomes the fourth
straight UD football player to win the
award after current Philadelphia Eagles
backup quarterback Andy Hall was honored
in 2004, linebacker Dan Mulhern was
honored in 2003, and wide receiver Jamin
Elliott was selected in 2002.
The
University of Delaware Outstanding Senior
Female Athlete of the Year will be honored
on Wednesday night, May 1, at the annual
UD Women's Awards Banquet at Clayton Hall.
A
four-year starter at cornerback and a
standout kick returner, Haugabrook served
as co-captain during the 2004 season for
head coach K.C. Keeler and led the Blue
Hens to a 9-4 record, a berth in the NCAA
I-AA quarterfinals, and a second straight
Atlantic 10 Conference title. He ranked
among the national leaders in punt returns
(11.4 yards per return) and kickoff
returns (27.4 avg.) and registered 67
tackles and two interceptions.
Haugabrook,
who signed a free agent contract with the
National Football League's Tennessee
Titans in April, started all 51 games
during his career and became just the
second player in UD football history to
earn all-conference honors all four years.
In
addition to being named the first
defensive player in league history to be
named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the
Year in 2001, Haugabrook also was the
first to be honored as a first team
all-league selection at three different
positions in 2004, being named first team
at cornerback, punt returns, and kick
returns.
He earned
consensus All-American honors as a senior
in 2004 when he was named first team
Walter Camp, first team American Football
Coaches Association, second team The
Sports Network, and second team Associated
Press. He also played in prestigious
East-West Shrine All-Star Game in Palo
Alto, CA .
He set 13
school records, including career games
played, career punt return yards, career
kickoff return yards, and career tackles
by a cornerback, and scored six career
touchdowns on returns. He also posted 12
career interceptions.
In
addition to Haugabrook, the following
student-athletes were honored as the
team's Outstanding Performer for each
sport as voted by team members.
BASEBALL:
Junior catcher Brian Valichka
(Urbana/Frederick, MD) was the winner of
the Papp Lukk Award as the UD Alumni
Association Team Most Valuable Player. A
three-year starter behind the plate for
the Blue Hens, Valichka has led the Blue
Hens to a record of 24-27 and a second
straight berth in the Colonial Athletic
Association Tournament later this month.
He is batting .274 this season and leads
the team with 16 doubles while also
hitting six home runs and knocking in 28
runs. A nominee for the Johnny Bench Award
as the top collegiate catcher in the
nation, Valichka has thrown out 19 of 43
base stealers this season and has
committed just four errors and four passed
balls. He batted . 362 with seven home
runs and 27 RBI last spring when he earned
first team All-CAA and first team All-East
Region honors. He is an honor student as a
sport management major.
BASKETBALL:
Junior forward Harding Nana (Newport
School, MD/Douala, Cameroon) was the
winner of the Col. C.B. Shaffer Award as
the team's Most Valuable Player. A
second-year team member after transferring
from Virginia Tech, Nana was one of the
most dominating players in the CAA this
past season, earning first team All-CAA
honors after leading the league in both
scoring (18.5 points per game) and
rebounding (10.4 rpg). He was one of just
six players in Division I to lead his
league in scoring and rebounding while his
19 double-doubles ranked fifth in the
nation this season. Nana ranked 11th
nationally in rebounding and 43rd in
scoring, was named to the San Juan
Shootout All-Tournament Team, and was
twice named the conference's player of the
week. He capped his season by scoring 46
points and grabbing 35 rebounds in
Delaware's two CAA Tournament games,
including a career-high 19 rebounds
against Virginia Commonwealth in the
quarterfinals. He is a leadership major at
Delaware.
CROSS
COUNTRY: Sophomore P.J. Meany
(Salesianum/Hockessin, DE) earned the
Alumni Association Cross Country Most
Valuable Player Award. The standout
distance runner led all Delaware
competitors in six of the seven meets this
past fall and helped lead the Blue Hens to
a fourth place finish at the Colonial
Athletic Association championships and
four other meet top four finishers. He won
individual race titles at the Towson
Invitational and the Delaware Invitational
while also placing 23rd at the CAA
championships and 60th at the NCAA
Mid-Atlantic Regional race. A business
major, he also placed sixth in the 5,000
meters at the CAA outdoor track and field
championships this past spring.
FOOTBALL:
Senior cornerback Sidney Haugbarook
(Woodward Academy/Atlanta, GA) was named
the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable
Player (see above for details).
GOLF:
Sophomore Joe McLister (Loudoun
County/Leesburg, VA) was the winner of the
John J. DeLuca/Scotty Duncan Alumni
Association MVP Award for the second
straight year. A team captain as a
sophomore, McLister recorded a team best
stroke average 76.58 this past season and
was the team's top finisher in seven
different tournaments. He carded a
season-best 69 in capturing the Goldey
Beacom College Spring Invitational this
past March and also was 13th at the
Lafayette Invitational, 16th at the John
McDonald/Temple Classic, and 23rd at the
Colonial Athletic Association
championships when he led the Blue Hens to
an eighth place finish. He recorded a
stroke average of 75.80 as a freshman in
2003-04 when he posted five top five
finishes and was 30th at the CAA
championships. He is a business major at
Delaware.
INDOOR
TRACK AND FIELD: Sophomore middle distance
runner Brad Dodson
(Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV) was the
winner of the Alumni Association MVP
Award. A second-year team member, Dodson
posted five meet first place finishes
during the 2005 indoor season, including
winning the mile, 1,000 meters, and 3,000
meters at the Thomson Invitational in
February. He also placed 10th in the
distance medley relay at the IC4A
championships. He set two school records
during the indoor season, posting a time
of 2:28.44in the 1,000 meters and 10:03.62
in the distance medley relay. During the
spring, he placed 12th in the 1,500 meters
at the CAA outdoor track and field
championships.
LACROSSE:
Senior goalkeeper Chris Collins
(Lakeland-Panas/Yorktown Heights, NY)
earned the Alumni Association MVP Award. A
three-year team captain, Collins led the
nationally-ranked Blue Hen men's lacrosse
to one of its finest seasons in 2005.
Delaware posted an 11-6 record, won the
CAA regular season title, lost to Towson
9-8 in the CAA Tournament title game, and
advanced to the NCAA Tournament for just
the third time in school history before
falling to Navy 9-7 in the opening round.
A two-time second team All-CAA selection,
Collins ranked among the national leaders
this season with a 7.56 goals against
average and a .584 save percentage. His
542 career saves ranks fourth all-time at
Delaware. He is a physical education major
at Delaware.
OUTDOOR
TRACK & FIELD: Senior weight thrower
Mike Yost (Lake Forest/Felton, DE) was the
winner of Fred J. Harmer Alumni
Association Team MVP Award. A four-year
letterwinner in both indoor and outdoor
track and field, Yost has enjoyed an
outstanding spring, winning eight outdoor
meet titles in the hammer and discus. He
captured the discus title at the Colonial
Athletic Association championships,
earning a spot in the NCAA East Regionals
later this month while also placing second
in the hammer throw at the meet. He
qualified for the IC4A championships in
both events, placing 15th in the hammer
and 19th in the discus despite a back
injury. He established career highs this
spring in the hammer (180-2, 4th all-time
at Delaware) and the discus (158-2, No. 7
at UD). He is a wildlife conservation
major at Delaware.
SOCCER:
Senior goalkeeper Kyle Haynes (St.
Michael's/St. Michael's,MD) was the Alumni
Association MVP. A four-year starter in
goal, Haynes started 72 of a possible 73
games during his career and set school
records for minutes played by a goalkeeper
in a season and career. He was a two-year
co-captain and finished his career third
all-time at Delaware with 351 saves and
fourth all-time with 13 shutouts. He
recorded career marks of 1.65 goals
allowed per game and a .739 save
percentage and had marks of 1.92 gaa and a
.721 save pct. as a senior. An honor
student as a political science and history
major, Haynes twice was named to the
National Soccer Coaches Association East
Region All-Academic team. In addition to
the team MVP Award, Haynes also received
the ECAC Medal of Merit Award as a
standout male letterwinner with a high
grade point index (3.715 gpa).
SWIMMING
& DIVING: Junior Levan Beridze
(Tbilisi, Georgia/Princeton, NJ) earned
the Jack and Hugh Dougherty Alumni
Association Team MVP Award. A first-year
transfer from Rutgers, Beridze posted five
top 10 finishes at the Colonial Athletic
Association championships in February,
including Delaware's first individual top
five finish since joining the league in
2001-02. He placed fourth in the 100
freestyle at the CAA meet while also
placing seventh in the 200 freestyle relay
and 400 freestyle relay and 10th in both
the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley
relay. His season-best time of 46.02 in
the 100 freestyle ranks as the second
fastest in UD history while his time of
21.18 in the 50 freestyle ranks No. 4
all-time. He was a consistent dual meet
winner all season and captured both the 50
freestyle and 100 freestyle at the
Bucknell Invitational. He is an
international relations major with a minor
in Russian.
TENNIS:
Freshman Jason Hanschmann
(Palatine/Palatine, IL) won the Alexander
J. Taylor Alumni Association MVP Award.
Hanschmann was outstanding in his first
collegiate season, leading the Blue Hens
to a dual match record of 12-7 and a berth
in the CAA quarterfinals while recording
the team's best singles and doubles
record. Playing mostly at the No. 6
singles spot, Hanschmann recorded a mark
of 18-7, setting a new UD record for
singles wins in a season. In doubles, he
teamed with Jesse Carl for a team-leading
17-5 mark playing at the No. 2 position.
He is an electrical engineering major at
Delaware.
Also
honored at the luncheon were the following
student-athletes.
Earning Miles Powell Jr.
Engineering/Athletics Scholarships were
cross country/track and field juniors Mike
Manlove (Archmere/Hockessin, DE) and
Charlie Dielmann (Salesianum/Wilmington,
DE), junior swimmer Michael Rasch
(Emmaus/Allentown, PA), senior golfer Dan
Spiker (Poolesville/Poolesville, MD), and
sophomore track and field runner Kyle
Schmid (Luther/Towson, MD). Manlove,
Rasch, and Spiker were repeat selections.
The awards are presented to letterwinners
who are also top engineering majors.
Manlove, a mechanical engineering major,
competed in both cross country and indoor
and outdoor track and field this season;
Dielmann, a CoSIDA Academic All-American
candidate as a mechanical engineering
major, placed 10th at the IC4A indoor
distance medley relay this past winter and
set a school record in the event; Rasch, a
chemical engineering major, was a
third-year letterwinner as a freestyler;
Spiker, a civil engineering major, closed
his career by recording a stroke average
of 78.18 and placed 34th at the CAA
championships; and Schmid, a civil
engineering major, was named the cross
country's squad's Rookie of the Year,
qualified for the IC4A championships in
the 4 x 800 meter relay during the indoor
track and field championships, and placed
10th in the 5,000 meters at the CAA
outdoor championships.
Junior tennis player Adam Liebman
(Staples/Westport, CT) was the winner of
the Lee J. Hynick Award as the junior
letterwinner on the UD men's tennis team
with the highest grade point index.
Liebman, who posted a 7-16 record playing
at No. 2 singles this past season, carries
a 2.93 grade point index as a leadership
and consumer economics major.
Freshman Daniel Abbott (Glasgow/Newark,
DE) earned the UD men's swimming and
diving Thomas Baranello Award as the
team's most improved swimmer. Abbott, who
did not start swimming until high school,
competed in the backstroke and
breaststroke events for the Blue Hens and
was 21st in the 100 backstroke and 28th in
the 200 backstroke at the CAA
championships in February.
Sophomore Brendan Spencer
(Yorktown/Arlington, VA) was the winner of
the Chuck Ganci for special contributions
to the men's swimming and diving team.
Spencer placed seventh in the 200
freestyle relay, seventh in the 400
freestyle relay, and 10th in both the 400
medley relay and 200 medley relay at the
CAA championships.
Junior Kevin DuPrey
(Lampeter-Strasburg/Lampeter, PA) received
the Sharp Academic Award for outstanding
academic success with the UD men's track
and field teams. DuPrey, who carries as a
3.88 gpa as a biology major, placed 35th
at the CAA cross country championships
last fall.
Sophomore Andrew Lynch (Cardinal
O'Hara/Springfield, PA) was the recipient
of the D. Kenneth Steers Award, presented
to a member of the UD track and field team
with outstanding academic success. Lynch,
who carries a 3.29 gpa as an exercise
physiology major, placed 11th in the
discus at the CAA outdoor track and field
championships in April.
Football senior linebacker Mondoe Davis
(Woodside/Newport News, VA) was the winner
of the Dr. Janice Jordan Award presented
by UD Student Services for Athletes to a
student-athlete who has made outstanding
progress academically while at Delaware. A
four-year standout for the football team,
Davis graduated in just over three years
and is currently enrolled in graduate
school at UD in public policy. He led the
team in tackles in both 2003 and 2004 and
earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors
this past fall.
Track and field senior Nick Riordan
(Skaneateles/Skaneateles, NY) received the
Outstanding Contributor Award presented by
the UD Student Services for Athletes
department. Riordan was honored for his
involvement with community service
projects and as a member of the UD
Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
Riordan overcame injuries suffered in a
car accident in December, 2003 and has
been a key member of the Delaware track
and field team in the jumping events. He
placed 11th in the long jump and 12th in
the triple jump at the CAA outdoor track
and field championships in April.
