Soccer Standout Lindsey Shover Named UD Female Athlete of the Year at Annual Women's Intercollegiate Awards Banquet

NEWARK, DE -- Lindsey Shover (at right), a standout goalkeeper who starred both on the soccer playing field and in the classroom during her career at the University of Delaware, was honored as the University's 2005-06 Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year at the annual UD Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Awards Banquet Wednesday night at Clayton Hall.

The Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award is selected from a vote of the head coaches of Delaware's 12 women's intercollegiate sports. Shover becomes the first women’s soccer player to earn the honor since the sport was elevated to intercollegiate status in 1991-92. Basketball standout Tiara Malcom won the award last season. High scoring Delaware men’s basketball forward Harding Nana was honored Tuesday as the UD Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year at the annual men’s awards luncheon.

Shover, a native of Lancaster, PA (Penn Manor High School), was a four-year starter in goal for the Blue Hens under head coach Scott Grzenda and helped lead the squad to a combined record of 38-26-8 and three trips to the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament. This past season she helped the Blue Hens post a record 10-5-4 (7-3-2 in CAA regular season), earn a regional top 10 ranking, and advance to the CAA semifinals for the first time in school history.

A team co-captain in both 2004 and 2005, Shover is an honor student as a health and physical education major and was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll three times as well as being a nominee for the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-American team.

A three-time CAA Player and Rookie of the Week during her career, Shover set school record for career goalkeeping save percentage (.841), ranks No. 2 all-time at Delaware in career minutes played (4,828), saves (244), and goals against average (0.86), and ranks No. 3 in shutouts (20).

She led the CAA in saves per game as a freshman in 2002 (5.08) and led the CAA in goals allowed average (0.49), save pct. (.875), and shutouts per game (0.50) in 2004. As a senior in 2005, Shover ranked among the CAA leaders as she appeared in 20 games and allowed 20 goals (1.02 goals allowed per game), registered 100 saves (.833 save pct.), and recorded nine shutouts.

In addition to Shover, the following student-athletes were honored as the team's Outstanding Performer for each sport as voted by team members.

BASKETBALL: Junior guard Tyresa Smith (Polytech/Dover, DE) was selected as the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player. A three-year standout for the Blue Hens, Smith has led Tina Martin’s squad to a three-year record of 56-24, a mark of 39-15 in CAA play, the 2005 CAA regular season title, and berths in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament in both 2005 and 2006. One of the nation’s top defensive players, she earned first team All-CAA honors in 2005-06 when she was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. She led Delaware in scoring (15.3 points per game), rebounding (6.4 rpg), steals (84), and blocks (22) this season and scored her 1,000th point in the season’s final game. Delaware posted a record of 22-8. She is a health and physical education major at Delaware.

CROSS COUNTRY: Senior Allison Behrle (Stonewall Jackson/Manassas, VA) was named the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Athlete for women’s cross country. A four-year letterwinner, Behrle served as team tri-captain in 2005 and led the squad to a fourth place finish at the CAA championships. She competed in all seven races during the 2005 season and had a season-best 28th place finish at the Delaware Invitational and finished 48th at the CAA meet. Also a standout distance runner in track and field, she placed eighth in the 10,000 meter run at the CAA outdoor championships in April. A CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee, she is an honor student as a nutrition and dietetics major.

FIELD HOCKEY: Senior Carly Campana (Piscataway/Piscataway, NJ) was named the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player for field hockey. A two-year letterwinner and two-year starter, she served as co-captain this past season for head coach Carol Miller’s squad. She started all 19 games in 2005, dished out one assist, and helped lead a defense that allowed just 2.12 goals per game. She was selected as an alternate to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association North-South Senior All-Star Game. As a junior she led the Blue Hens to the CAA title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She is a human services, education, and public policy major at Delaware.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: Junior weight thrower Rachel Young (Sparta/Sparta, NJ) was named the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Athlete for women’s indoor track and field. A three-year letterwinner, Young was the team’s top weight thrower, winning the shot put title at the Jack Pyrah Invitational, Princeton Invitational, and New York University Fasttrack Invitational. She closed the year by placing 15th at the ECAC championships in the shot put and during the season set a new school record in the event with a toss of 45-4 1/2. During the outdoor season, she placed third in the shot put and sixth in the hammer throw at the CAA meet and placed 16th in the shot put at the ECAC championships. She is a CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee as an environmental science major.

OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: Sophomore sprinter Paula Green (Hodgson/Milford, DE) was the recipient of the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Athlete Award for women’s outdoor track and field. A first-year letterwinner, she won four meet sprint titles during the spring and placed third in the 4 x 100 meter relay, fifth in the 4 x 400 meter relay, and 10th in the 200 meters at the CAA championships in April. She also placed 15th in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the ECAC championships and set a school record in the 4 x 200 meter relay (1:40.99) at the Penn Relays.

LACROSSE: Senior attack Megan Hager (Conestoga/Berwyn, PA) was the winner of the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player Award in women’s lacrosse. A four-year letterwinner, Hager earned second team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in 2006 as she ranked second on the team with 38 points on 26 goals and a team-high 12 assists. She played in all 17 games with 14 starts, was second on the team with 82 shots, and also recorded 30 groundballs, 21 draw controls, and 10 caused turnovers. She scored two or more goals seven times with a career-high five vs. Towson. She played in 60 career games with 34 starts and collected 52 goals and 32 assists. She is an honor student as a sport management major at Delaware.

ROWING: Senior Lane Kohl (Governor Mifflin/Mohnton, PA) was honored as the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Athlete for rowing. A three-year letterwinner, she has been a mainstay of Delaware’s Varsity Eights boat this season and led the squad to its fourth Colonial Athletic Association unofficial team title in the last five seasons. She was part of the Varsity Eights team that captured the CAA title with a time of 7:03.9 and also advanced to the second round at the Dad Vail Regatta and placed fourth in the petite finals at the ECAC Metro Championships. She is an honor student as an exercise science major, is a two-time member of the College Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar Athlete Team, and is a CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee.

SOCCER: Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Shover (Penn Manor/Lancaster, PA) was the recipient of the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player Award for women’s soccer. See information above.

SOFTBALL: Sophomore second baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston/Fallston, MD) was honored as the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player for softball. Borchers enjoyed a record-setting season in leading the Blue Hens to a berth in the CAA Tournament with a 33-24 record this spring. The 2005 CAA Rookie of the Year, she earned first team All-CAA honors this spring after hitting a team-leading .382 with four home runs, seven triples, 35 runs batted in, and 36 runs scored. She established school records for hits in a season (73), runs scored in a season (36), games played in a season (57), walks in a game (4), total bases in a season (105), and longest hitting streak (15). She ranks among the national leaders in triples and currently ranks No. 2 in the CAA in batting average. She is an exercise physiology major at Delaware.

SWIMMING: Freshman Sarah Begley (Conestoga/Berwyn, PA) was named the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Athlete for women’s swimming. In just her first season, Begley was a key contributor to the Blue Hen efforts, helping Delaware place fifth at the CAA championships, an improvement of four spots from the previous season. One of the team’s top freestyle sprinters, she placed second in 400 medley relay, third in the 100 butterfly, eighth in both the 400 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay events, 11th in the 100 freestyle, and 12th in the 50 freestyle at the CAA championships. Her top times in the 50 freestyle (24.43), 100 freestyle (52.86), and 100 butterfly (56.98) all rank in the top three all-time at Delaware.

TENNIS: Sophomore Susan Pollack (Wyomissing Area/Wyomissing, PA) was the winner of the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player Award for the second straight season. Playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the second straight season, Pollack earned first team All-CAA honors in doubles as she teamed with freshman Amanda Campbell to post a record of 22-6, setting a school record for doubles wins in a season. She also earned second team All-CAA singles honors after posting a team-best record of 17-7. She captured the Flight A doubles title at the Old Dominion Tournament during the fall and competed at the ITA Regionals in both singles and doubles. She is a marketing major at Delaware.

VOLLEYBALL: Junior libero Heather Ranck (Chambersburg/Chambersburg, PA) was named the UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player for volleyball. A three-year letterwinner, Ranck enjoyed an outstanding season, leading the team with 39 services aces and ranking 30th in NCAA Division I with 614 digs (5.25 per game), the fifth highest single season total in UD history. She played in all 31 matches and tied for the team lead with 117 games played. She also earned all-tournament honors at the Delaware/Asics Tournament early in the season. She is an honor student as a sociology major at Delaware.

Also honored at the banquet were the following student-athletes.

• Senior cross country and track and field runner Allison Behrle (Stonewall Jackson/Manassas, VA) was presented the ECAC Medal of Merit as the UD senior female student-athlete and letterwinner with the highest cumulative grade point index. Behrle, a four-year letterwinner in cross country who also won the team’s Most Valuable Player Award and placed eighth in the 10,000 meter run at the CAA outdoor track championships, carries a 3.937 grade point average as a nutrition and dietetics major. She is a CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee.

• Senior women’s soccer defender Jennifer Krepps (North Penn/Lansdale, PA) was the winner of the UD Student Services for Athletes Outstanding Contributor Award. A four year letterwinner, she started all 20 games this past fall and helped lead the UD soccer team to a berth in the CAA semifinals. A biology education major at Delaware, she earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic first team honors for the second straight year this past fall.

• Senior women’s lacrosse midfielder Diana Hall (Centreville/Clifton, VA) was presented the UD Student Services for Athletes Dr. Janice Jordan Award. The award honors a student-athlete who has made outstanding progress academically while at Delaware. An honor student as an exercise physiology major with a minor in coaching science and strength and conditioning, Hall was a four-year letterwinner for the Blue Hens. After missing the entire 2005 season with an injury, she returned to serve as co-captain of the team and appeared in 16 games with 10 starts and scored one goal in 2006.
