Delaware Announces Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Awards for 2004 Fall Season

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware athletics department has announced the winners of the Blue Hen Team Sportsmanship Awards for the 2004 fall athletics season.

Now in its second year, the Blue Hen Sportsmanship program honors those student-athletes who have been outstanding role models and displayed outstanding sportsmanship towards their teammates, coaches, opponents, and game officials. The winter sports winners will be announced in March and the spring sports winners in June. The winners are selected by the coaching staffs of each sport.

The 2004 fall winners are Jason Gordon (men's cross country), Leslie Wason (women's cross country), Leah Geib (field hockey), Shelby Lawrence (women's soccer), Richard Zeller (men's soccer), Niecy Taylor (volleyball), and Mark Moore (football).

"We are once again proud to honor these individuals for their efforts in showing true sportsmanship throughout the year," said University of Delaware Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson. "These special student-athletes have shown that you can be an outstanding competitor on the field and still accomplish your goals with great character and sportsmanship while showing respect to your opponents and officials."

Gordon, a senior from Newark, DE (Christiana High School), led the Delaware men's cross country team to a fourth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association championships in November. A two-year letterwinner, he competed in six of the team's seven events this past fall and placed 37th overall at the CAA championships.

Wason, a sophomore from Wilmington, DE (Brandywine HS), led the Blue Hen women's cross country squad to a fifth place finish at the 2004 CAA meet. She competed in five meets during the season with a season-best ninth place finish at the Delaware Invitational #1. She also the Hens' sixth place finisher at the CAA championships with a 47th place overall finish.

Geib, a senior from Schwenskville, PA (Souderton HS), won the team award for the second straight year. A four-year standout, Geib led the Blue Hen field hockey team to a 15-7 record, the CAA tournament title, and the team's first NCAA Tournament berth since 1988 this past fall as she scored seven goals and dished out 12 assists. She earned second team All-American honors by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, was named CFHCA All-Region for the second time in her career, and all-conference honors for the third time in her career. A two-time CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she is a CoSIDA Academic All-American candidate and an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship nominee.

Lawrence, a junior midfielder from Columbus, OH (St. Francis DeSales HS), led the UD women's soccer team to a 9-6-3 overall record this fall as she scored one goal and dished out one assist as a starter in all 18 games. She is a three-year starter for the Blue Hens.

Zeller, a senior midfielder from Narberth, PA (Haverford HS), led the Blue Hen men's soccer team a record of 4-13-1 this past season when he was the team's second leading scorer with eight points on three goals and two assists. A four-year letterwinner, Zeller played in 64 career games at Delaware.

Taylor, a junior middle hitter from Albuquerque, NM (Cibola HS), earned the award for the second straight year. A three-year standout, she led the Blue Hen volleyball team to one its best seasons ever in 2004 as the Hens posted a 23-9 record, placed third in the CAA regular season standings with a mark of 9-5, and advanced to the CAA championship game before falling to No. 1 seed Towson. Taylor played in all 32 matches this past fall and led the team with .98 blocks while ranking fifth with a .212 hitting percentage. She also posted 1.95 kills per game.

Moore, a senior linebacker from Lewes, DE (Cape Henlopen HS), capped an outstanding four-year career for the Blue Hen football squad in 2004, leading the team to a record of 9-4, a share of the team's second straight Atlantic 10 title, and a berth in the NCAA I-AA quarterfinals. He started all 13 games in 2004 and ranked fifth on the team with 67 tackles, including four tackles for loss and one sack.
