NEWARK, DE -- Five University of Delaware student-athletes have been honored by the school with Miles Powell Jr. Scholarships for outstanding achievement on the playing field and in the classroom.

The annual awards honor UD student-athletes who also excel in the academic field of engineering.

Those honored were men’s lacrosse senior midfielder Paul Rodriguez (at right), men’s lacrosse sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Scherr, men’s track and field junior distance runner Kyle Schmid, men’s track and field sophomore long jumper Brandon Swartout, and UD men’s tennis player Jonathan Edwards.

Rodriguez, a mechanical engineering major from Wilmington, DE (St. Mark’s High School), and Scherr, a chemical engineering major from Owings Mills, MD (Mt. St. Joseph’s High School), led the No. 19 ranked Blue Hen men’s lacrosse squad to a record of 12-5 and a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship game Saturday. The Blue Hens fell to the No. 2 ranked Pride 12-6 in the title game.

A four-year letterwinner, Rodriguez appeared in all 17 games this season as a longstick midfielder and started 12 contests. He has scored five goals and dished out three assists from his defensive position and recorded 17 groundballs and five caused turnovers.

Scherr, a second-year team member, started all 17 games in goal this season and played all but 65 minutes of action. He allowed 136 goals for a 8.55 goals against average and posted 180 saves for a .570 save pct. He ranked third in the CAA and among the top 25 nationally in both categories. He posted a season-high 19 saves vs. Hofstra in the championship game and 17 vs. Towson in the 13-12 CAA semifinal win to earn a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team.

Schmid, a civil engineering major from Lutherville, MD (Towson High School), has been among Delaware’s top distance runners during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons and also competed in the fall for the UD cross country squad. He posted three top 10 finishes during the cross country season and placed 38th at the CAA championships. During the indoor track season, he placed 16th in the distance medley relay at the IC4A regional championships and during the outdoor season this spring placed eighth in the 5,000 meters at the CAA championships.

Swartout, a civil engineering major from Bear, DE (Salesianum School), is a second-year member of the Blue Hen indoor and outdoor track and field squads this season. He placed 10th in the long jump at the CAA outdoor championships in April.

Edwards, a chemical engineering major from Dunkirk, MD (Northern High School), earned a letter for the UD men’s tennis team during the 2003-04 season but has not competed during the last two seasons. He posted a record of 1-3 in singles and 5-6 in doubles during the 2003-04 season.
