BALTIMORE -- UMBC won five of six singles matches and two of three in doubles play en route to a 6-1 victory over the University of Delaware men's tennis team on Wednesday afternoon at the Retriever Tennis Center, sending the Blue Hens to their second consecutive loss.
Sophomore Austin Longacre notched UD's only singles win of the day, as he scored a 6-0, 6-1 rout of the Retrievers' Chris Meyer at No. 1. Sophomores Sam Barrer (at right) and Camilo Perez, meanwhile, provided another Hen highlight by defeating Meyer and Fredi Voorman 8-7 (7-5) in a hotly-contested third-doubles match.
In other singles action, UMBC's Nick Savage-Pollock downed Delaware sophomore Nolan Greenberg by a 7-5, 6-3 score at No. 2, while Irfan Shamasdin outlasted Barrer in a 7-5, 7-5 decision at No. 3. Freshman Chris Hincker came up just two points short in a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) heartbreaker to David Jackson in their fourth-singles showdown.
Senior Jonathan Schwartz fell victim to the Retrievers' Fredi Voorman, who posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Perez didn't fare much better in his sixth-singles match against Fernando Ferreira, falling 6-4, 6-2.
Delaware (8-6, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association) doesn't hit the court again until April 17, when the CAA Championships begin in Newport News, VA.
