BETHLEHEM, PA - The University of Delaware men's tennis team fought off a pesky Lehigh squad for a 5-2 victory on Tuesday evening at Lewis Tennis Center, the Blue Hens' second straight win.
Delaware (3-3) got a first-singles win from sophomore standout Austin Longacre, who defeated John Nespoli in a 6-1, 7-5 straight-setter. Fellow sophomore Sam Barrer (at right) delivered at No. 3 by posting a 6-3, 6-2 win over J.T. Bolcar, while freshman Chris Hincker dropped the first set before battling back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Arnaldo Pacheco at the fourth spot.
Senior Jonathan Schwartz picked up the Blue Hens' fourth singles win of the day, making quick work of Robert Bolcar in a 6-0, 6-2 decision.
Delaware swept the three doubles match-ups to pick up another point. Longacre and junior Nolan Greenberg coasted past Nespoli and Troy Lisk of Lehigh for an 8-4 win at first doubles, while Schwartz and sophomore Andrew Blumberg rolled past their Mountain Hawk opponents 8-1 at the No. 2 slot. Barrer and sophomore Camilo Perez finished Lehigh off with an 8-4 victory at No. 3.
The Hens defeated the Mountain Hawks for the first time since the 2002-03 season, when they posted an identical 5-2 victory at Lehigh. LU had won two straight over Delaware coming into tonight's match.
The Hens return to the court on Thursday versus Saint Joseph's in a match that was rescheduled after an Oct. 9 postponement.
