PRINCETON, NJ -- Delaware sophomore Austin Longacre (right) won five matches over three days to take home the consolation title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional, defeating Harvard's Aba Omodele-Lucien, 6-2, 6-1, in Monday's consolation final.
Longacre suffered a first-round loss in the main draw on Friday, but stormed through the first two rounds of the backdraw 24 hours later without surrendering a set.
UMBC's Dave Jackson pressed Longacre in Sunday's quarterfinal, extending him to three sets. But the Blue Hens' No. 1 singles player triumphed in the tie-breaker, just as he did in a hard-fought semifinal victory over Jackson's teammate, Fredi Voorman. That win set up Monday morning's showdown with Omodele-Lucien, a Longacre rout that improved his fall record to 14-3.
Longacre's win punctuated a successful regional week for the Blue Hen men. On Saturday, the sophomore standout teamed with junior Nolan Greenberg to upset the No. 1 seed in the doubles draw and earn a spot in the round of 16.
