PRINCETON, NJ -- Sophomore Austin Longacre (right) and junior Nolan Greenberg scored a major upset in the second round of doubles play Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional, stunning top-seeded George Carpeni and Alex Krueger-Wyman of Princeton, 8-5, to secure a spot in Sunday’s round of 16.
Longacre and Greenberg, the Blue Hens’ top two singles players, improved to 7-1 on the year in doubles action with the victory over Carpeni and Krueger-Wyman, ranked 10th and 25th, respectively, in the 128-man singles field.
The Delaware duo, which defeated Connecticut’s Joe Goldstein and Ben Scheuler in Friday’s opening round, will take on 16th-ranked Alex Svetlakov and Artem Vlasenko of Saint John’s tomorrow with a quarterfinal berth on the line.
In Friday’s singles action, Longacre fell to Fairleigh Dickinson’s Josh Girling, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the main draw.
No Blue Hen doubles team has advanced to the round of 16 since John Tully and Robert Wirth did it in 2004.
The ITA regional is a springboard to the national stage, as the two singles finalists and the winning doubles team will qualify for next month’s ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
