University of Delaware Men’s Tennis Team Earns No. 7 Seed for the 2007 CAA Tennis Championships Beginning Thursday

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams each earned the No. 7 seed and will face George Mason in the first round of the CAA Tennis Championships which will be held April 19-22 at the Huntington Park Tennis Center.

The Blue Hen men’s team, which is 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the conference this season, will take on the 10th-seeded Patriots Thursday at 2 p.m. in the first round. The winner of that match moves on to face second-seeded Old Dominion in the quarterfinals Friday at 2 p.m. The Monarchs are ranked No. 30 in the latest ITA rankings.

Defending champion VCU, which is ranked No. 29, is the top seed in the men’s bracket, followed by Old Dominion, William & Mary, Georgia State, UNC Wilmington, James Madison and Delaware.

The Delaware women, who are 9-10 overall and 4-3 in the league, will also face 10th-seeded George Mason Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the first round. The winner of that match will take on No. 26 and second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth in the quarterfinals Friday at 2 p.m.

William & Mary, which is ranked No. 16 in the country, garnered the leagues top seed, followed by VCU, Old Dominion, Georgia State, UNC Wilmington, James Madison and Delaware.

The Blue Hen men are led by Sam Barrer, who is 14-10 this season, and Jon Schwartz (at right), who is 12-9 on the year. Barrer and Camilo Perez have gone 7-3 at No. 3 doubles for Delaware, while Austin Longacre and Andrew Blumberg have posted a team-high eight doubles victories for the Hens.

The Delaware women are led by Alexa Dragonette, who has posted a team-high 19 singles victories, and Brittany Barsky, who is 15-9 on the year. Senior Liz Perlow and Julie Schiller lead the way in doubles as the duo has gone 6-0 on the year.

Both Delaware teams have advanced to the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals in each of the last five seasons, but neither has advanced past that round.

Match #6: No. 3 William & Mary vs. No. 6 James Madison - 4:30 p.m.

Semifinals - Saturday, April 21
Match #7: Match #3 winner vs. Match #4 winner - 1 p.m.

Match #9: Match #7 winner vs. Match #8 winner - 1 p.m.
