University of Delaware Men’s Tennis Edges UMBC, 4-3

BALTIMORE, MD -- The University of Delaware men’s tennis team posted a 4-3 victory at UMBC while the Blue Hen women fell to the Retrievers, 6-1, Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Hen men’s team snapped a four-match losing streak to improve to 5-5 on the year, while UMBC fell to 7-8 on the season. Nolan Greenberg defated Irfan Shamasdin 6-3, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 singles for Delaware, while Jonathan Schwartz topped Mehrban Iranshad 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 5 and Josh Levine (right) recorded a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Lief Hollowell at No. 6.

Nick Savage-Pollack defeated Jesse Carl 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 for the Retrievers, while David Jackson bested Adam Liebman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Fernando Ferreira posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Josh Ditman at No. 4.

Jason Hanschmann and Philip Wayne defeated Savage-Pollock and Shamasdin, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles while Schwartz and Levine recorded an 8-5 win over Hollowell and Djan Gusmao at No. 3 at the Blue Hens took the doubles point. Jackson and Ferreira topped Carl and Greenberg, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles for UMBC.

The Delaware women dropped their fourth straight match to fall to 4-6 on the year, while the Retriever women improved to 5-9 on the season. Brittany Barsky was the lone winner for the Blue Hens, as she posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Debora Lin at No. 6 singles to improve to 12-3 this season.

Ale Pedergnana defeated Susan Pollack 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for UMBC, while Cornelia Carapcea topped Amanda Campbell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2. Joy Adewumi needed three sets to outlast Liz Perlow 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3, Elizabeth Anderson defeated Sari Shuster 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, and Pascaline Cette edged Alexa Dragonette 4-6, 6-4, 10-2 at No. 5.

Pedergnana and Carapcea defeated Pollack and Campbell, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles for the Retrievers, while Adewumi and Anderson edged Dragonette and Barsky, 8-6, at No. 2. Cette and Emily Portner completed the doubles sweep for UMBC with an 8-4 victory over Shuster and Julie Schiller at No. 3.

The Delaware women travel to Towson on Friday for a 2 p.m. match with the Tigers, while both Blue Hen teams will take on George Mason Sunday at 12 noon in Fairfax, VA.
