NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Josh Ditman and Josh Levine advanced to the finals of the men’s B doubles draw as the University of Delaware men’s tennis team competed in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational of Newport News Friday through Sunday.
Ditman and Levine defeated Jon Bair and Brandon Lindsley of Longwood, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the draw and topped Jason Hill and John Waters of Navy, 8-4, in the semifinals before falling to Nick Savage-Pollack and James Tyler of UMBC, 8-5, in the finals. Nolan Greenberg and Philip Wayne fell to Savage-Pollack and Tyler, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the draw.
In the men’s A doubles draw, Nicolas Frayssinoux and Juan Carlo Vazquez of American defeated Jesse Carl and Jason Hanschmann, 6-4, in the round of 16. Zach Chafitz and Jonathan Schwartz topped Steven Inge and Worth Robinson of Christopher Newport, 6-4, in the round of 16 of the men’s C doubles draw and posted a 6-4 victory over Jeff Claudill and Jeff Zenisek of Virginia Wesleyan in the quarterfinals before falling to Bert Baggio and Andy Clayton of Georgetown, 8-5, in the semifinals.
Ditman (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) defeated Tyler 6-2, 6-0 in the men’s A singles draw before falling to Sebastien Ripoll of Virginia Commonwealth 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16. Carl (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Ted Tywang of Georgetown in the round of 32 and fell to Nate Nelms of Navy, 8-3, in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. Adam Liebman (Westport, CT/Staples) fell to Jason Hill of Navy 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 in the round of 32 and was defeated by John Snead of James Madison, 8-4, in the round of 16 in the consolation bracket.
Hanschmann (Palatine, IL/Palatine) fell to Faron Carter of Howard 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 32 in the men’s B singles draw, but defeated Brain Clay of James Madison, 8-2, in the round of 16 in the consolation bracket and topped Rich Moran of Georgetown, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals were not played. Greenberg (Glendale, WI/Nicolet) was defeated by Etienne Paris of Georgetown 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 32 and fell to Othmane Garma of Howard, 8-4 in the consolation bracket’s round of 16.
Wayne (Huntington, NY/Huntington) defeated John Braig of Mary Washington 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 32 in the men’s C singles draw and posted a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 victory over Don Davidson of James Madison in the round of 16 before falling to Josh Levitz of American 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Schwartz (Roslyn Heights, NY/Wheatley School) fell to Mark Doumba of American 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 32, but rebounded to record an 8-4 win over Eddie Glidewell of Christopher Newport in the consolation bracket’s round of 32. After receiving a bye in the round of 16, Schwartz fell to Roger Tomes of Longwood, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
Levine (Wappingers Falls, NY) defeated Kevin Repper of Christopher Newport 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 32 in the men’s D singles draw but fell to Kevin Walsh of Georgetown 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 in the round of 16. Chafitz (Owings Mills, MD/Pikesville) lost to Barak Sky of American 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 in the round of 32, but defeated Adam Peters of Christopher Newport in the consolation bracket’s round of 32 due to injury. After receiving a bye in the round of 16, Chafitz fell to James Protnoy of Georgetown, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
Delaware returns to action on October 27 when the Blue Hens travel to La Salle for a 2:30 p.m. match with the Explorers.
