MELBOURNE, FL -- The University of Delaware tennis teams opened their annual spring trip to Florida with a split Monday afternoon as the Blue Hen women swept host Florida Institute of Technology 9-0 and UD men fell to FIT 5-4.
The Blue Hen women won all nine matches to snap a two-match losing streak and improved to 4-2 on the season. FIT fell to 2-15 for the season. Susan Pollack, Amanda Campbell, Liz Perlow, Sari Shuster, Alexis Dragonette, and Brittany Barsky all won their singles matches with Pollack, Campbell, and Barsky all claiming their team-high 10th singles wins of the season. Shuster improved to 41-26 for her career, moving into 11th place on the all-time UD singles wins list.
In doubles, action, Pollack and Campbell improved to 15-2 with an 8-2 win over FIT’s Belen Pandre and Kim Tucker at the No. 1 spot, Dragonette and Barsky won at No. 2, and Shuster and Julie Schiller won by default at the No. 3 spot. Shuster improved to 37-22 all-time in doubles action at Delaware.
On the men’s side, Delaware fell to 4-2 on the season with the 5-4 setback to the NCAA Division I Panthers, who improved to 4-13. The match was the 150th for Delaware head coach Laura Travis, who is now 149-101 in her 14th season at the helm of the Blue Hens.
Claiming singles wins for the Hens were Nolan Greenberg at No. 3, Josh Ditman (at right) at No. 5, and Jon Schwartz at No. 6. Greenberg improved to 9-3 on the season while Ditman improved to 47-29 for his career, moving into eighth place all-time at Delaware. Schwartz also improved to 6-3 on the year in singles.
In doubles action, Delaware got its only win at the No. 2 spot where Jason Hanschmann and Philip Wayne combined to post an 8-2 win over FIT’s Diego Quiros and David Fowler.
Delaware will take the day off Tuesday and continue their spring trip at Stetson in Deland, FL Wednesday afternoon.
