Hen Men's Tennis Drops Tight 4-3 Verdict
to JMU; Wayne Wins Two Matches for
Hens

-- The University of Delaware men's and
women's tennis teams were both defeated by
James Madison Sunday afternoon at the
Delaware Field House Tennis Courts in the
Blue Hens' final match before the upcoming
Colonial Athletic Association
championships later this week.
The
Delaware men (11-6, 2-3 CAA) had a
two-match win streak snapped with a 4-3
setback to the Dukes while the Delaware
women (15-6, 4-2 CAA) had a three-match
win skein ended with a 6-1 loss to James
Madison.
The
pairings for the CAA Tournament will be
announced early this week. The CAA men's
tournament will be held April 21-24 at Old
Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.
The
Delaware men were involved in their fifth
4-3 match of the season but came out on
the losing side as James Madison won four
of the six singles matches to clinch the
victory.
The Blue
Hens got singles victories from Jonathan
Schwartz at No. 5 singles and from Phil
Wayne(at right) at No. 6 singles and
doubles wins from the teams of Jesse Carl
and Jason Hanschmann at No. 2 and from
Wayne and Sammy Carl at No. 3.
Schwartz
won his third straight singles match to
improve to 8-3 while Wayne improved to
9-1. In doubles, Carl and Hanschmann
improved to 16-2 with their fifth straight
win and Carl and Wayne improved to 16-4
with their victories. The 16 doubles wins
this season is the second highest in UD
history and second only to the school
record of 18 wins set by Jeff Dumansky and
Jeff Olmstead, who went 18-3 in
1973-74.
On the
women's side, Delaware posted just two
victories as Alexa Dragonette posted a
6-4, 6-2 win over Rebecca Vanderelest at
the No. 3 singles flight and then teamed
with Marissa Singer for an 8-5 win over
Laura Graham and Ashley Reyher at No. 3
doubles. The Hens played without No. 1
singles and No. 1 doubles player Susan
Pollack who was sick.
Dragonette
improved to 11-6 with her third straight
victory in singles and improved to 18-3 in
doubles action this season.
Delaware's
Liz Perlow moved up to No. 1 singles due
to the absence of Pollack and dropped a
6-1, 6-4 decision to Kristin Veith. Perlow
fell to 19-9 on the season but played in
her 28th singles match of the season,
breaking the UD record of 27 set by
Kristin Wasniewski in 1997-98.
