NEWARK, DE
-- It was a day of milestones for the
University of Delaware men's tennis team
Friday afternoon as John Tully (far right)
tied the school record for singles wins in
a career and Jason Hanschmann (near right)
set a new UD standard for singles wins by
a freshman in a season as the Blue Hens
posted a 7-0 victory over Colonial
Athletic Association foe George Mason at
the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.
The Blue
Hens, who won all five singles events
played in straight sets, won their second
straight match to improve to 11-5 overall
and 2-2 in CAA action. Delaware has won 10
or more matches for 14 straight seasons.
The match was the 1,000th played in
Delaware history since as the Blue Hens
have posted a dual record of 567-423-10 in
94 seaons since 1909.
Tully, a
senior from Pittsford, NY
(Pittsford-Sutherland HS), posted a 6-0,
6-4 win over George Mason's Stephen Dufils
at the No. 1 spot to improve to 15-11 on
the season and 57-45 for his career. The
57 wins matches the UD record held by Jon
Zolin, who went 57-5 in 1971-75. Tully
also holds the UD record for singles
matches played in a season (30 in 2002-03)
and a career (102).
Hanschmann,
a freshman from Palatine, IL (Palatine
HS), recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over the
Patriots' Miles Hughes at the No. 5 spot
to improve to 17-6 on the season, breaking
the previous UD freshman record of 16 set
by Jeff Harrison in 1989-90 (16-3) and
Steve Querner in 1978-79 (16-1). The 17
wins is the highest win total on the team
and the sixth highest win total in school
history.
Also
posting singles victories for the Blue
Hens were Adam Liebman at No. 2, Josh
Ditman at No. 3, Jesse Carl at No. 4, and
Jonathan Schwartz at No. 6. Liebman downed
Tim Bainton 6-3, 6-4, Ditman was a 6-1,
6-2 winner over Eric Vogel, Carl posted a
6-1, 6-0 victory over Rob Santos, and
Schwartz won by default as George Mason
brought only five players to the match.
In
doubles, the Hens got victories from Tully
and Robert Wirth at No. 1, Carl and
Hanschmann at No. 2, and Philip Wayne and
Sammy Carl at No. 3. Tully and Wirth
downed Bainton and Dufils 8-2, Jesse Carl
and Hanschmann downed Vogel and Hughes
8-4, and Wayne and Sammy Carl won by
forfeit. Jesse Carl and Hanschmann
improved to 15-4 and Wayne and Sammy Carl
upped their record to 15-2.
The 15
wins is tied for the second highest single
season doubles win total in UD history
with the team of David Paul and Kyle
Binnington, which went 15-1 in 1994-95.
The school record for doubles wins is 18
(18-3) set by Jeff Dumansky and Jeff
Olmstead in 1973-74.
The
Delaware men continue action Sunday when
they host CAA foe James Madison at 9 a.m.
at the Delaware Field House Courts. That
match will be followed by the UD women
taking on JMU at approximately 11 a.m.
