Day One - February 19, 1999
Blue Hen Men 1st After Opening
Day
ORONO, ME -- After the first day of the
America East Swimming and Diving Championships the
University of Delaware men's swimming team, looking to win
its third straight conference title, is in first place with
276 points, 40 point in front of second place Drexel (236).
The UD women's swimming team is fifth
with 128 points, with Boston University leading the field
with 241 points.
The University of Delaware men's team has
not captured a first place finish yet, but the Hens used
depth to jump out to a first place lead finishing in four of
the top six spots in the 500 freestyle and placed fourth
through sixth in the 50 Yd freestyle.
Delaware's top performance of the day
came from Ryan Fauth (Gettysburg,Pa./Gettysburg) who
set a new UD record inthe 200 yard individual medley with a
second place time of 1:55.84.
Delaware also got strong performances
from its 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Ian Miller,
Brian McGillen, John Fernandes and Mike Zambarano
who finished second with a time of 1:26.39, Mike
Gallagher and Luke Schenck who finished second
and third respectively in the 500 yard freestyle medley with
times of 4:27.67 and 4:39.70, Tom Maday who finished
third in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of
1:56.52 and Brian Aston who placed third in the one
meter dive with a score of 411.40.
The Delaware women's team finished strong
in several events on the day, but ended the day with 128
points in fifth place. Jennifer Haus had the best
result for the women with a second place finish in the 500
yard freestyle with a time of 5;05.95. Delaware's 400-yard
medley relay team of Lisa Dillinger, Sara Dyson, Kathryn
Fryer and Haus finished third with a time of 3:59.43,
setting a school record. Amanda Stouffer finished
third in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.94 while
Tanya Mainville finished fifth in the three-meter
dive with a score of 367.35.
Delaware will compete in the second and
final day of the America East Swimming and Diving
Championships on Saturday Feb. 20, with preliminaries
starting at 11 a.m. and finals getting underway at 6:30 p.m.
