Blue Hen Men Sweep 12 Events, Cruise to Victory over VMI

HARRISONBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware men's team swept the top-three spots in 12 events as the Hens cruised to a 200-67 victory over the Virginia Military Institute during their meet hosted by James Madison at the Savage Natatorium.

On the women’s side, the Blue Hens improved to 11-3 on the season, including 3-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association, after dominating VMI, 254-4, before falling to CAA foe Madison, 182-116.

Throughout the men’s sixteen-event competition, Delaware, who improved to 8-3 on the season, sported 13 winners, 12 runner-ups, and another dozen third-place finishers. The Hens swept the top-three spots during the first 10 events of the meet and added two more sweeps over the last six disciplines.

Delaware had four athletes record multiple victories. Dominic Pavlik paced the field in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.43) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:04.28). Matt Abbruzzese (at right) also claimed victory in both the 1- and 3-Meter dives, earning scores of 245.40 and 266.10 respectively.

Senior Andrew Zinn continued his incredible season, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.53 before capturing the 50-Free in 21.05. Grady Carter also touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.39), while he, along with Adam Mullan, Scott Dunlap, and Adam Blomberg, anchored the victorious 200-yard medley relay team (1:40.26).

Among Delaware’s other winners were Craig Young in the 100-yard backstroke (54.04), Scott Tsuchitani in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.86), and John Ohlhaver in the 100-yard freestyle (47.79). Craig Offutt, who won the 100-yard backstroke in 2:00.98, and Matt Wehrman, who paced the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.45, rounded out the victorious Hens.

For the women, Shannon Burke led the team after capturing both platform-events, taking the 1-Meter dive with a score of 240.90 before also winning the 3-Meter event with 244.65 points.

Maryann Walker also had a nice day at the pool as she won the 200-yard IM (2:13.38) and finished second in the 200-Free (1:56.08). Cortney Barry glided to a win in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:29.65 before finishing as the runner-up in the 500-yard event (5:13.04).

Emily Smathers also won the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.14), placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.41), and joined with Walker, Kellie Pastore, and Sarah Begley to finish third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:52.01.

The Blue Hen swim teams return to the pool this Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Widener during their last home meet of the season.
