University of Delaware Swimmers Open 2007-08 Season With Sweep over CAA Foe George Mason

FAIRFAX, VA -- Grady Carter (at right), Andrew Zinn, and Matt Wehrman each captured two first place finishes to lead the UD men while Cortney Barry, Sarah Begley, Meghan Barber, and Maryann Walker each captured three titles for the Blue Hen women as the University of Delaware swimming and diving teams opened the 2007-08 season by sweeping George Mason Saturday afternoon at McKay Natatorium.

The Delaware men (1-0) defeated George Mason 153.5-146.5 while the Blue Hen women (1-0) posted a 172-148 victory over the Colonial Athletic Association foe Patriots.

Wehrman, a freshman, captured the 1,000 freestyle in 9:54.68 and swam a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:11.12), Zinn was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team and broke his own school record in winning the 50 freestyle (20.62), and Carter, a redshirt freshman, was the winner of the 100 freestyle (47.55) and 200 freestyle (1:44.26) events.

Also winning for the Blue Hens were Matt Abbruzzese in the one-meter dive (268.05) and Troy Sattgast in the 200 butterfly (1:59.45). Zinn also placed second in the 100 freestyle (47.73) and 200 medley relay (1:36.79) while Carter was also second in the 50 freestyle (20.84) and second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:13.27).

On the women’s side, Begley won the 100 butterfly (58.60) and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:38.88) and 200 medley relay (1:51.27), Meghan Barber won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.51), 200 breaststroke (2:30.34), and 200 medley relay, Walker was a winner in the 400 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle (1:55.65), and 200 backstroke (2:08.04) and Barry, a freshman, won the 500 freestyle (5:11.39), 1,000 freestyle (10:27.51), and 400 freestyle.
