WASHINGTON, DC -- Sophomore Garrett Arant (at right) and freshman Grady Carter each won three events for the University of Delaware men and Maryann Walker was a winner in three events for the UD women as the Blue Hen swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet from host Georgetown University Saturday afternoon.
The Delaware men, off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2000-01 season, defeated the Hoyas by a score of 149-75 while the Delaware women (2-0), downed Georgetown 150-88. The UD women have defeated Georgetown in all eight meetings while the Delaware men have won four straight duals over the Hoyas.
Arant (Newark/Newark, DE) captured the 1,000 freestyle (10:03.29), 400 individual medley (4:19.22), and 500 freestyle (4:54.99) while Carter (Newark/Newark, DE) was a winner in the 50 freestyle (21.50), 100 freestyle (47.87), and 400 medley relay (3:37.17). Carter’s time in the 50 freestyle was the seventh fastest in UD history.
Also posting multiple wins for the Blue Hens was sophomore and last week’s Colonial Athletic Association Diver of the Week Matt Abbruzzese (Bellmore/Merrick, NY), who captured the one-meter (262.20 points) and three-meter (233.78) diving events for the second straight meet. In all, Delaware won 10 of the 13 events as the Blue Hens also got wins from Ryan Carolan (200 butterfly) and Adam Blomberg (200 freestyle).
Walker (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott City, MD), who captured two events in last week’s season-opening win over George Mason, won three first place finishes this week as she captured the 100 freestyle (54.29), 200 freestyle (1:58.25), and 400 medley relay (4:01.23). Emily Smathers (McKean/Newark, DE) also won multiple events as she won the 200 backstroke (2:12.11) and teamed for the win in the 400 medley relay.
Delaware won nine events led by Sarah Bergan (3m diving), Cecily Connell (500 freestyle), Kailey Pelton (200 butterfly), Rachel Greene (50 freestyle), and Meredith Law (1,000 freestyle).
Both teams will continue action Nov. 3-4 when the Blue Hens host Old Dominion, William & Mary, and Northeastern for a CAA quad meet at Rawstrom Pool.
