RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware men’s swimming and diving standouts Andrew Zinn and Matt Abbruzzese (at right) are the first weekly winners of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimmer and Diver of the Week Awards.

Zinn, a junior from Wilmington, DE (McKean High School), was named the CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week while Abbruzzese, a sophomore from Merrick, NY (Bellmore High School), was named the CAA Men’s Diver of the Week.

Also winning awards were George Mason sophomore Katie Kelly as CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week and Towson sophomore Jennie Katch as CAA Women’s Diver of the Week.

Zinn and Abbruzzese helped lead the Delaware men’s team to a season-opening 178-107 victory over George Mason last Saturday at Delaware’s Rawstrom Pool. The win was the first ever for the Hens over George Mason in six tries. The Patriots were last year’s CAA runners-up. The Delaware women also defeated George Mason by a score of 156-144.

Zinn dominated the meet vs. George Mason as he won four events to lead the Hens to the win. He captured first place in the 50 freestyle (21.10) and the 100 freestyle (47.58) and swam legs of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:37.19) and 400 freestyle relay team (3:14.18). His time of 21.10 in the 50 freestyle was the third fastest time in school history.

Abbruzzese, who also earned CAA Diver of the Week honors once last year as a freshman, was also a double winner vs. George Mason. He captured the one-meter diving event with a score of 246.0 and also claimed the title in the three-meter diving event (247.65). He placed in the top seven in both diving events at the 2006 CAA championships.

Both the Delaware men and women continue action this Saturday when they travel to Washington, DC to take on Georgetown in a 1 p.m. dual meet. The UD men are looking to open the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
