Delaware Men Post Eighth Place Team Finish at CAA Championships; Abbruzzese, Zinn Place Fourth

FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware women placed fifth in the team standings for the second straight year and the Blue Hen men were eighth for the second straight season as the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships closed out the fourth and final day of action Saturday at George Mason University’s McKay Natatorium.

Delaware picked up its only individual championship finish Saturday night as sophomore Maryann Walker captured the women’s 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.87 to break her own school record. The Hens had five top 10 finishes on the women’s side and the UD men had eight top 10 performances on Saturday to close out the meet on a high note.

The William & Mary women captured their first-ever team title with 623 points to outdistance defending champion UNC Wilmington with 572.5 points. Towson was third followed by George Mason, Delaware, Northeastern, Davidson, Drexel, James Madison, College of Charleston, and Old Dominion.

UNC Wilmington captured its second straight men’s team title with 573 points, edging host George Mason for the title. James Madison was third followed by William & Mary, Old Dominion, Towson, Davidson, Delaware, College of Charleston, and Drexel.

Walker became Delaware’s first individual champion since 2004-05 as she captured the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:02.87 and broke the school record she held. Also for the UD women, Kellie Pastore was eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.38), the 400 freestyle relay team of Walker, Rachel Greene, Meredith Law, and Sarah Begley was ninth in a time of 3:34.67, Stephanie House was ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:07.38), and Michelle Stephens was 10th in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.50).

For the Delaware men, Matt Abbruzzese was fourth in the three-meter diving event (272.55), Andrew Zinn (at right) was fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.04), the 400 freestyle relay team of John Ohlhaver, Brendan Spencer, Adam Blomberg, and Zinn was seventh in 3:08.24, Garrett Arant was seventh in the 1,650 freestyle (16:22.89), Ben Blotner was eighth in the three-meter dive (203.15), Tom Gallagher was ninth in the three-meter dive (185.75), Joe Virion was 10th in the 1,650 freestyle (16:29.61), and Troy Sattgast was 10th in the 200 butterfly with the second fastest time in school history at 1:54.82. Ohlhaver also was 11th in the 200 backstroke with a school record time of 1:53.49, breaking the previous mark of 1:53.91 set by Pat Mead in 1991-92.

William & Mary’s Katie Radloff and George Mason’s Tom Koucheravy were named women’s and men’s Outstanding Swimmers, Drexel’s Kate Hynes and Brett Molash were named women’s and men’s Outstanding Divers, William & Mary’s McGee Moody and James Madison’s Chris Feaster were named women’s and men’s Swimming Coach of the Year, and Drexel’s Larry May was named men’s and women’s Diving Coach of the Year.
