FAIRFAX, VA -- University of Delaware swimmers set four school records and posted 11 top 10 finishes during the third day of the Colonial Athletic Association men’s and women’s championships Friday at George Mason University’s McKay Natatorium.
The Delaware women had nine top 10 finishes and ended the third day in fifth place in the team standings with 256 points. William & Mary is in first place with 418 points followed by defending champion UNC Wilmington, Towson, George Mason, Delaware, Northeastern, Davidson, Drexel, James Madison, College of Charleston, and Old Dominion.
The Delaware men had two top 10 finishes and are currently in eighth place with 154 points. Defending champion UNC Wilmington is in first place with 385 points followed by James Madison, George Mason, William & Mary, Towson, Old Dominion, Davidson, Delaware, College of Charleston, and Drexel.
The Blue Hen men set two school records as John Ohlhaver (at right) placed sixth in the 100 backstroke with a school record time of 52.29, breaking the previous record of 52.40 set by Josh Smith in 1994-95. Ohlhaver then teamed with Andrew Zinn, Scott Tsuchitani, and Adam Blomberg to place sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:24.50. That time broke the school record of 1:24.59 by Mike Servant, Kyal Hackett, Pete Holcroft, and Clint Tracy in 1992-93.
Other UD men posting top 20 finishes were Blomberg’s 14th place showing in the 100 butterfly (52.59), Cory Sanderson was 16th in the 400 individual medley (4:11.26), Adam Mullan was 16th in the 100 backstroke (53.88), Garrett Arant finished 18th in the 400 individual medley (4:13.22), Brendan Spencer was 18th in the 100 backstroke (54.70), Scott Tsuchitani was 20th in the 100 butterfly (53.07), and Joe Virion was 20th in the 400 individual medley (4:15.65).
On the women’s side, Sarah Begley placed fifth in the 100 butterfly (57.28), Emily Smathers was fifth in the 100 backstroke (58.21), Kellie Pastore was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.59), Maryann Walker was sixth in the 100 backstroke (58.79), Michelle Stephens was sixth in the 400 individual medley (4:32.24), the 200 freestyle relay team of Rachel Greene, Kendall Warren, Begley, and Walker was seventh (1:37.43), Walker was eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:53.69), Emily Pretz was ninth in the one-meter diving event (210.70), and Stephanie House was 10th in the 100 butterfly (58.08).
Smathers set a school record in the 100 backstroke (58.21), breaking her own record and the 200 freestyle relay team broke the school record of 1:37.87 set by by Jenna Blongiewicz, Andrea Rossi, Sara Stephens, and Jill Fitzgerald in 2001-02.
Also for the UD women, Meredith Law was 11th in the 400 individual medley (4:35.07), Sarah Bergan was 12th in the one-meter dive (202.30), Emily Watts was 12th in the 100 backstroke (59.74), Lisa Goyette was 15th in the one-meter dive (197.75), Kailey Pelton was 16th in the 100 butterfly (59.77), Brenna Davis was 17th in the 100 backstroke (1:01.22), and Smathers was 17th in the 100 butterfly (59.04).
