RICHMOND, VA -- For the second time this season and for the third time in his young career, University of Delaware sophomore diver Matt Abbruzzese (at right) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Male Diver of the Week for the period ending Nov. 7.
Abbruzzese, a sophomore from Merrick, NY (Bellmore High School), was one of four student-athletes honored by the CAA for their performances last week. Also honored Men’s Swimmer of the Week Brian Freitag of James Madison, Women’s Swimmer of the Week Melissa Milstead from UNC Wilmington, and Women’s Diver of the Week Brooks Wallace from Northeastern.
Abbruzzese was honored for his performance in last week’s CAA tri-meet vs. William & Mary and Old Dominion hosted by Delaware at Rawstrom Pool. The sophomore captured both the one-meter diving event (284.90 points) and three-meter diving event (284.0) to lead the Blue Hens (3-1, 2-1 CAA) to a 206-141 win over Old Dominion and a 201-150 loss to William & Mary.
He was named CAA Men’s Diver of the Week earlier this season when he won both diving events in a season-opening dual meet win over George Mason. He is undefeated on the boards in duals this season, winning all three first place finishes in both events.
Abbruzzese was also named CAA Men’s Diver of the Week once last season. At last year’s CAA Championships at George Mason, he placed sixth in the one-meter dive and seventh in the three-meter dive.
Delaware will continue action on Saturday when the Blue Hen men and women travel to Philadelphia to take on Vermont and host Drexel in a three-way meet.
