HARRISONBURG, VA -- The University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving team posted its seventh straight dual meet victory while the Blue Hen men dropped a close verdict in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet Saturday at James Madison.

The Blue Hen women improved to 10-1 (6-1 CAA) with a 136-107 victory while the Delaware men (3-7, 2-5 CAA) fell by a score of 126-108. The Delaware women have now reached 10 dual wins for the first time since the 1995-96 season and have won seven straight duals for the first time since the 1996-98 seasons.

The Delaware women, who downed the Dukes for the third straight year, used depth to pick up their victory, winning just seven races but capturing five seconds and 10 third place finishes.

The Blue Hens had just one double winner as Meredith Law captured the 500 freestyle (5:12.28) and swam a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:36.91), teaming with Stephanie House, Kendall Warren, and Ellen Heinz. Law also placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:58.38).

Also winning for the Hens were Katie Zoretic in the 1,000 freestyle (10:47.75), Shannon Burke in the three-meter dive (213.15), Alyson Oliver in the one-meter dive (277.80), Kellie Pastore in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.16), and the 400 medley relay team of Emily Watts, Lauren Southard, Sarah Begley, and Maryann Walker (4:01.37).

Heinz was also second in the 200 freestyle (1:57.88) and 500 freestyle (5:13.46), Walker was second in the 100 freestyle (54.47), Southard was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.55), Begley was third in both the 50 freestyle (25.21) and 100 freestyle (55.07), Oliver was third in the three-meter dive (176.70), Burke was third in the one-meter dive (174.15), and Zoretic was third in the 500 freestyle (5:19.45).

For the Delaware men, Andrew Zinn (at right) was in on three victories as he captured the 50 freestyle (21.75) and the 100 freestyle (47.39) and teamed with Levan Beridze, Ulik Sokolov, and Adam Blomberg to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:14.25). Freshman diver Matt Abbruzzese, last week’s CAA Diver of the Week, continued to excel as he won both the one-meter (244.05) and three-meter (246.63) events. Also winning events for the UD men were Joe Virion in the 1,000 freestyle (10:02.87) and Mark Erdosy in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.38).

Beridze was also second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.95) and third in the 400 medley relay (3:39.85), Erdosy was third in the 400 medley relay, Virion was third in the 500 freestyle (4:54.43) and 400 freestyle relay (3:22.31), and Blomberg was third in both the 200 individual medley (2:02.17) and 200 butterfly (2:01.65).

Both Delaware teams will travel to Baltimore to take on Loyola (MD) next Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m.
