Blue Hens Earn Best Ever Finish at CAA Championships as 400 Freestyle Relay Sets School Mark

FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams closed out action at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Saturday night at George Mason University’s Jim McKay Natatorium by placing fifth in the women’s team standings and eighth in the men’s standings.

UNC Wilmington swept both team championships with the Seahawk men winning their fifth straight title and the UNC Wilmington women dethroning four-time defending champion George Mason with their first CAA title since 1999.

The Delaware women, who improved upon last year’s ninth place finish, posted five top 10 finishes while the Blue Hen men collected four top 10 finishes to place eighth, their best team finish in five seasons in the CAA.

The Blue Hens set two records on the night as the men’s 400 freestyle relay team of Levan Beridze (at right), Adam Blomberg, Brendan Spencer, and Andrew Zinn swam to a record time of 3:06.73 to place fourth overall, breaking the UD record of 3:07.79 which had stood since 1988-89. On the women’s side, Maryann Walker placed fifth in the 200 backstroke with a school record time of 2:06.17.

Also for the Hens, Beridze was fifth in the men’s 100 freestyle with the second best time in UD history (45.75), Lauren Southard was fifth in the women’s 200 breaststroke with the second best time in school history (2:21.52), Emily Smathers was seventh in the women’s 200 backstoke (2:08.14), Matt Abbruzzese was seventh in the men’s three-meter dive (242.55 points), the women’s 400 freestyle relay team of Walker, Sarah Begley, Kendall Warren, and Ellen Heinz was eighth with the second best time in UD history (3:32.77), and Meredith Law was ninth in the women’s 1,650 freestyle (17:37.68).

Also for the Hens, Emily Watts posted the second best 200 backstroke time in UD history with an 11th place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:07.41) and Troy Sattgast swam the second fastest men’s 200 butterfly time in school history (1:55.73) in 11th place.
