RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware freshman divers Matt Abbruzzese (at right) and Alyson Oliver have been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Male and Female Diver of the Week for the period ending January 10.

The two led the Blue Hen swimming and diving teams to a sweep over CAA foe Towson Saturday in Delaware’s final home meet of the season at Rawstrom Pool. The Delaware men snapped a 26-dual match losing streak with a 119-112 win over Towson while the Blue Hen women captured their sixth straight victory with a 142-99 victory over the Tigers.

Abbruzzese, a freshman from Merrick, NY (Bellmore HS), was one of four Delaware athletes to win two events in the men’s meet as he captured the one-meter event with a score of 243.52 points and won the three-meter event with a score of 233.48.

Abbruzzese became the second Blue Hen team member to earn weekly CAA honors this season as sophomore Andrew Zinn was named CAA Swimmer of the Week back on Nov. 13.

Oliver, a freshman from West Palm Beach, FL (Suncoast HS), was one of
four Blue Hen women to capture more than one event as she won the
one-meter dive with a score of 240.37 and captured the three-meter event
with a total of 217.43 points.

In addition to Abbruzzese and Oliver, also earning weekly CAA honors
were mens’ Swimmer of the Week Gordon Amato of Towson and women’s
Swimmer of the Week Liz Leberz of Towson. Amato, a freshman, won three
events for the Tigers vs. Delaware while Leberz captured two individual
firsts for Towson against the Blue Hens.

Delaware will continue action this Saturday when both the men’s and
women’s teams travel to Harrisonburg, VA to take on James Madison at 1
p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14.
