November 1, 2003 Blue Hens Win First Meet of the Season; Skacel in On Three Wins for Hens NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women won nine events to give head coach John Hayman his 100th career victory at UD and the Blue Hen men won their first meet of the season behind three wins from Alex Skacel on the way to a non-league swimming and diving sweep over Georgetown Saturday at Rawstrom Natatorium.
The Delaware women (3-0) posted a 143-98 victory over Georgetown (0-1) to remain undefeated on the season while the Blue Hen men (1-2) won their first meet of the season with a 143-96 win over the Hoyas (0-2). In the women's section, Hayman won his 100th career meet at Delaware, improving to 100-59 in his 15th season at the helm. The UD women dominated the action as Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) captured the 200 butterfly (2:11.01) and 200 individual medley (2:12.94), Jill Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA) captured the 50 freestyle (24.83) and 100 freestyle (54.02), Kim Fields (Severna Park/Severna Park, MD) won the 1,000 freestyle (10:37.26), Louisiana State transfer Lauren Ostroski (Methacton/Norristown, PA) won the 200 breaststroke (2:25.52) in her Delaware debut, and Sara Reed (East/West Chester, PA) won the 200 freestyle (1:59.00). The 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), Ostroski, Stephens, and Erica Pearson (Howard/Columbia, MD) was also a winner in a time of 4:06.08. On the men's side, Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown, NJ) had a hand in three victories as he won the 200 backstroke (2:02.38) and 200 individual medley (2:02.22), and teamed to win the 400 medley relay (3:46.00) with freshman Cory Sanderson (Einstein/Kensington,MD), David Hardy (DeMatha/Rainier,MD), and freshman Brendan Spencer (Yorktown/Arlington, VA). Freshman Steve Henn (Dix Hills/Dix Hills, NY) won the one-meter diving event (248.10 points) and was second in the three-meter, Kevin Kotowski (Salesianum/Wilmington, DE) won the 100 freestyle (49.63) and teamed with Jeff Shields (Lawrence/Lawrenceville, NJ), Colin Gibson (Radnor/Villanova,PA),and freshman Matt DuShuttle (Caesar Rodney/Wyoming, DE) to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:20.91), Shields won the 200 freestyle (1:50.24), and Sanderson, making his collegiate debut, won the 1,000 freestyle (10:21.83). Both teams will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 8 for a dual meet at Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason. AGATE:
