February 18, 2004 Blue Hen Men Finish in Top 10 in Two Relays FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware opened up the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving championships by capturing the women's 800 freestyle relay Wednesday night at George Mason's Aquatic and Fitness Center. Delaware's 800 relay team of Sarah Peffer, Meredith Law, Sara Reed, and Jill Fitzgerald captured first place with a time of 7:35.91, breaking the school record of 7:43.61 set last season and the CAA meet record of 7:35.76 set by Old Dominion in 1998. The CAA title was the fourth in Peffer's two-year career at Delaware. Peffer's 200 meter split of 1:51.83 in the 800 freestyle relay also set a new school record, breaking the mark of 1:52.94 set by Nancy Davis in 1994-95. The Delaware women are in ninth place after the first day of action with 45 points. Host George Mason holds the women's team lead with 124 points followed by William & Mary, Davidson, Drexel, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, James Madison, College of Charleston, Delaware, and Towson. Towson holds the first day men's lead with 74 points followed by George Mason, UNC Wilmington, William & Mary, Old Dominion, Davidson, Drexel, College of Charleston, James Madison, and Delaware. The Delaware men posted two top 10 finishes in relay competition. The 800 freestyle relay team of Brendan Spencer, Joe Virion, Adam Goldstein, and Colin Gibson swam to a ninth place finish in a time of 7:11.57 while the 200 medley relay squad of Alex Skacel, David Hardy, Spencer, and Gibson was 10th in a time of 1:39.31. The Blue Hen women also competed in the three-meter diving event with Sarah Bergan placing 12th (327.20 points), Tara Jakeway was 19th (212.90), Emily Pretz placed 20th (210.15), and Jamie Hartnett was 21st (199.0).
