UD wins second-straight

 

NEWARK, DE -- Julie Van Deusen and Sandy Stephens set a school records for the University of Delaware women and Lavar Larks won both diving events for the University of Delaware men as the Blue Hens swept Georgetown at Rawstrom Natatorium Saturday afternoon. Both Georgetown men (6-2) and women (6-2) lost for only the second time this season.

The Delaware men (5-6) won their second straight-meet with the 130.50-106.50 victory, taking eight of the 13 first-place finishes. The UD women (8-5) won their third-straight meet, also capturing eight first place finishes in the 135-99 victory over the Hoyas.

For the Delaware women, Van Deusen (Hill School, PA/Bear, DE) continued her perfect season, by rebreaking her school record in the one-meter diving event with a total of 271.12. The previous record of 266.70 was set by Van Deusen just two-weeks ago. She also captured the three-meter event finishing with a total of 273.75.

Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) broke her own school record in the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:22.57. She set her previous school record in the 200 breastroke last season with a score 2:23.08.

Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) brought home a pair of victories for the Blue Hen women in the 200 (1:57.40) and the 500 freestyle (5:12.79). Other UD winners included Lindsay Dellavalle (Hunterdon Central/Flemington, NJ) in the 50 freestyle (25.43), Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) in the 200 butterfly (2:09.69) and Jill Fitzgerald (Archbishop Wood/Warminster, PA) in the 50 freestyle (54.68). The UD 400 Medley Relay team of Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), Fitzgerald, Sara Stephens and Sandy Stephens brought home victory in the 400 Medley Relay.

The UD divers completed the sweep of Georgetown on the men's side, as Lavar Larks (Mount Pleasant/Wilmington, DE) brought home victorys in both the one-meter (271.20) and three-meter (274.72) events.

Other first place finishers for the Delaware men were Bryan Kahner (Jericho/Jericho, NY) in the 1000 freestyle (10:03.83), Alex Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown, NJ) in the 200 butterfly (1:57.39), Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) in the 200 breastroke (2:14.58), Robert Frey (West Chester East/West Chester, PA) in the 400 IM (4:15.62) and Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) in the 500 freestyle (4:51.56). The Delaware men's 400 Medley Relay team of Rick Dressel (McKean/Wilmington, DE), Skacel, Wasiewski, and Weisser also brought home victory.

Saturday's meet was the final dual meet of the season for the UD swimmers before they make their first-ever trip to the CAA Championships at George Mason University the weekend of February 22-24.
