Hens Fall to Drexel but Kahner, Weisser Win Three Events for UD
NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Meghan Petry and diver Julie Van Deusen each won two events as the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team defeated Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel University for the 11th straight time with a 156-66 victory Saturday at UD's Rawstrom Natatorium. In the men's meet, Delaware's Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS) and Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) each won two events, but it wasn't enough as Drexel posted a 132-113 victory in the 50th meeting between the two rivals. The Delaware women improved to 3-2 on the season with their second straight victory as they downed Drexel (0-3) for the 11th straight time. The Blue Hens won 10 of the 12 events on the day. In the men's meet, Drexel (2-1) downed the Hens (1-3) for the fourth time in the last five meetings although Delaware captured first place in seven of the 13 events. For the Delaware women, Van Deusen (Hill School/Bear, DE/Syracuse Univ.) remained undefeated at 10-0 in diving events this season as she won the one-meter event with 253.72 points and the three-meter event with 251.10 points. Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) won the 200 freestyle (1:59.66) and 200 butterfly (2:11.55) events and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:18.25). Other winners for the Blue Hens were Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:44.62), Jill Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA) in the 50 freestyle (25.87), Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) in the 200 individual medley (2:12.91), Andrea Rossi (Muhlenberg/Reading, PA) in the 100 freestyle (55.04), Kim Fields in the 200 backstroke (2:12.73), and the 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli (Shanahan/West Chester, PA), Rebecca Caldwell (McCaskey/Lancaster, PA), Lindsay Mathers (Bowie, MD HS), and Danielle Hack (Susquehanna Twp./Harrisburg, PA) which won in 4:14.08. Rossi was also second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.83), Mathers was second in the 200 butterfly (2:15.54), Fitzgerald was second in the 100 freestyle (55.83), and Tamara Hosford (Attleboro, MA HS) was second in both diving events. In the men's race, Kahner had a hand in three first place finishes as he won the 1,000 freestyle (10:12.71) and 500 freestyle (4:51.83) and swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay (3:37.24) along with Alex Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown, NJ), Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA), and Rick Dressel (McKean/Wilmington, DE). Also for the Hens, Weisser won the 200 freestyle (1:48.75) and 100 freestyle (49.30) and swam a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:20.54) along with Neumann Marlett (Belvidere, NJ HS), Jacob Yohe (Dallastown/Jacobus, PA), and Eric Youngblood (Wayzata/Plymouth, MN). Dressel also captured the 200 butterfly (2:01.80) and was third in the 50 freestyle (23.19) while Wasiewski was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.33) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:01.25). For the Drexel men, Kevin Coogan won both diving events with totals of 335.50 in the one-meter and 301.42 in the three-meter event while Sam Harris captured both the 200 individual medley (1:59.60) and 200 backstroke (1:56.98). Both Delaware teams will continue action Nov. 30-Dec. 1 when the Blue Hens host the four-team Delaware Invitational at Rawstrom Natatorium.
