Day Two Results February 23, 2002 George Mason University UD Men Remain 9th; Frey Just Misses School Record in 400 IM
FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware women dropped one spot back to fourth place and the Blue Hen men remained in ninth place after the second day of the 17th annual Colonial Athletic Association Championships Saturday evening at George Mason University's Aquatic and Fitness Center. The third and final day of the championships will be Sunday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. followed by the finals set for 6 p.m. Host George Mason remained in first place on the women's side with 414 points followed by defending champion James Madison, William & Mary, Delaware, UNC Wilmington, Towson, Old Dominion, Davidson, and Drexel. On the men's side, UNC Wilmington remained in first place with 412.5 points followed by three-time defending champion James Madison, George Mason, William & Mary, Towson, Drexel, Old Dominion, Davidson, and Delaware. The UD women, who set three records on the first day of the meet, set three more on Saturday as Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) placed second in the 100 butterfly with a UD record time of 56.88 (old mark 57.83), the 200 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE), Sara Stephens, and Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover, MA HS) finished fourth with a school record time of 1:47.25, besting the record of 1:49.39 set in 2000-01, and Avioli set a new record in the 100 backstroke by placing 10th in a time of 59.10, bettering the mark of 59.61. Also for the UD women, Sandy Stephens placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.97), Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) was fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:53.93), and Kathryn Fryer (Severna Park, MD HS) was seventh in the 100 butterfly (58.69). For the men, Delaware placed ninth in the two relays as the 800 freestyle relay team of Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS), Nick Grossman (Daniel/Clemson, SC), Sam Blacker (West Potomac/Alexandria, VA), and Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) swam to a time of 7:07.52 and the 200 medley relay team of Bob Frey (East/West Chester, PA), Alex Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown, NJ), Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) and Kahner raced to a time of 1:38.25. Individually, Frey placed 10th in the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:09.47, just .02 off the school record. AGATE: Team Standings After Day 2: 1. UNC Wilmington - 412.5; 2.
