Delaware Men in Ninth Place After Day One; Larks 4th in Diving 

FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team set three school records and ranks third after the first day of action and UD men are ninth at the 17th annual Colonial Athletic Association Championships Friday at George Mason University's Aquatic and Fitness Center.

The second day of the three day meet will begin with preliminaries at 10 a.m. with the finals set for 6 p.m. The third and final day of action will be held Sunday.

Host George Mason leads the women's meet with 203 points followed by defending champion James Madison with 162 points and Delaware with 144. Towson is fourth followed by UNC Wilmington, William & Mary, Old Dominion, Davidson, and Drexel.

On the men's side, UNC Wilmington is atop the leader board wi th 199 points followed by three-time defending champion James Madison with 185.5. George Mason is third followed by William & Mary, Drexel, Towson, Old Dominion, Davidson, and Delaware.

Delaware had two second place finishes as junior diver Julie Van Deusen (Hill School/Bear, DE) was the runner-up in the three-meter diving event with 453.30 points and the 400 medley relay team of freshman Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), freshman Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE), sophomore Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE), and sophomore Jill Fitzgerald (Archbishop Wood/Warminster, PA) swam to a school record time of 3:53.58. The old mark was 3:55.03 set last season.

Sandy Stephens also placed third in the 200 individual medley, breaking her own school record (2:07.51) with a time of 2:06.71 while senior Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) was fourth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:03.01. Also the 200 freestyle relay team of senior Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover/Andover, MA), Sara Stephens, freshman Andrea Rossi (Muhlenberg/Reading, PA), and Fitzgerald was fifth with a school record time of 1:37.94. The old mark was 1:38.93 set in 1991-92.

Leading the Delaware men was junior Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant/Wilmington, DE) who placed fourth in the one-meter diving event with 244.40 points and junior Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) who was eighth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:43.07.
