Swimmers Win Twice as UD Snaps

NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed
out their 2000-2001 home schedule with a sweep of Loyola
Saturday at Rawstrom Natatorium.
The Blue Hen men (3-7) snapped a
seven-meet losing streak with a 150-137 victory over Loyola
(2-5) while the Blue Hen women improved to 4-6 with a
165-119 victory over the Greyhounds. Delaware will close out
its dual meet season next Saturday at Georgetown in
preparation for the America East conference championships
Feb. 16-18 at the University of Maine.
The Delaware men, 13-1 all-time vs.
Loyola, captured nine events as Mike Gallaher
captured two freestyle events and Neumann Marlett, Tim
Wasiewski, Rick Dressel, and Brian Salcetti all
won individual events and teamed up to capture the 200
medley relay in 1:41.40.
Gallaher (West Peabody/Peabody, MA) won
the 200 freestyle (1:46.14) and 500 freestyle (4:48.60)
while Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) won the 200
breaststroke (2:15.39), Salcetti (Landon/Potomac, MD)
captured the 200 butterfly (2:02.83), Dressel
(McKean/Wilmington, DE) won the 50 freestyle (22.82), and
Marlett (Belvidere, NJ HS) was the winner in the 200
backstroke (2:04.39).
Other winners for Delaware were Kevin
Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) in the 1,650
freestyle (17:16.17) and Brendan Donnelly (Delran, NJ
HS) in the 100 backstroke (57.54). Loyola's Jamie Barone won
both the 100 breaststroke (1:00.97) and 400 individual
medley (4:40.61) for the Greyhounds.
The Delaware women, 9-0 all-time vs.
Loyola (3-4), won 10 events as Kathryn Fryer (Severna
Park, MD HS) and Sandy Stephens (St.
Mark's/Wilmington, DE) each won three events and Meghan
Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) and Jennifer
Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) each won twice.
Petry, a freshman, set her third school
record of the year in winning the 1,650 freestyle in
17:07.71 while Stephens set a school record for the second
straight meet in winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.51.
Petry broke the mark of 17:09.99 by Nancy Davis in
1995 while Stephens broke the UD mark of 1:07.67 by Donna
Brockson in 1987.
Fryer won the 200 butterfly ( (2:10.91)
and 100 freestyle (55.26) and swam a leg of the winning 200
medley relay team (1:53.07) while Stephens won the 100
breaststroke and 200 breaststroke (2:26.11) and was a member
of the 200 medley relay.
Petry also won the 200 backstroke
(2:12.60) while Haus was the winner in both the 50 freestyle
(25.69 and 500 freestyle (5:13.63). Also winning for the
Blue Hens was Denise Duncheskie (Gwynedd
Mercy/Oreland, PA) in the 100 backstroke
(1:01.85).
For Loyola, Cara Pensabene won both the
200 freestyle (2:00.71) and 200 freestyle relay (1:48.66)
while Sarah O'Donnell won both the 1-meter and 3-meter
diving events.
