Season With Victory; Dressel Wins Three in UD
Debut
RICHMOND, VA -- The University of
Delaware mens' and women's swimming and diving teams opened
up their 2000-2001 seasons Friday night with a split at the
University of Richmond.
The four-time defending America East
champion Delaware men (1-0) ran their winning streak over
two seasons to six with a 181-96 victory over Virginia
Military Institute while the host Spiders downed the Blue
Hen women (0-1) 175-125. The UD women had won their final
five meets during the 1999-2000 season.
The Delaware men captured 11 first place
finishes on their way to the easy victory. Sophomore Rick
Dressel had a hand in three victories while senior
Mike Gallaher and sophomore Lavar Larks each
won twice. Dressel, a graduate of McKean High School, swam a
leg of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:42.50) and won
100 freestyle (50.32) and 100 butterfly (54.09).
Gallaher, a senior from West Peabody, MA
(Peabody), was the winner in the 500 freestyle (4:54.71) and
200 freestyle (1:47.65) while Larks (Mt. Pleasant HS) won

Wasiewski in the 100 backstroke (1:01.68), and
Anthony Pierce in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.97).
Wasiewski was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay
team.
In the women's race, Delaware won five
individual races but Richmond won it with depth.

(Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) was a double winner in
her collegiate debut, winning the 1000 freestyle in 10:35.27
and the 500 freestyle in 5:12.25. Other winners for the Blue
Hens were junior Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover, MA HS)
in the 100 backstroke (1:02.33), junior co-captain
Danielle Hack (Susquehanna Twp./Harrisburg, PA) in
the 100 breaststroke (1:11.00), and junior Kathryn
