NEWARK, DE -- Freshman midfielder Ben Rodkey (right) scored his first career goal with 2:36 remaining in regulation as the University of Delaware men's soccer team battled Northeatern to a 1-1 double- overtime draw Friday night at rain-soaked UD Mini-Stadium.
Northeastern striker Santiago Bedoya gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead just 16:30 into the match, an edge that NU would hold until the waning moments of the second half. At 87:24, Rodkey settled a loose ball in the left side of the box and buried it into the lower right corner of the net to knot the score.
The teams played two scoreless overtime periods, as the Hens threatened several times in the second extra frame.
Midfielder Paul Danaher and forward Sobhan Tadjalli led Delaware (2-10-2, 2-4-1 CAA) with two shots apiece, while forward Ahmed Talaat anchored the Huskies' attack with three shots of his own.
Northeastern (5-8-1, 3-3-1 CAA) out-shot UD, 10-9, in a hard-fought game marred by five yellow cards and 24 fouls.
Delaware coach Ian Hennessy was pleased with his Blue Hens, who stayed in the hunt for a conference tournament berth with a point.
"I am so proud of the group tonight," the second-year head man said. "We have a great spirit in the group and it showed. I know that the fans that showed up enjoyed some quality, flowing soccer again tonight."
The Hens have netted three goals in their last two matches, as many as the team scored in its previous 12 outings combined. Freshmen have accounted for four of UD's six goals on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Thames made four saves for Delaware, which will visit Hofstra at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
