NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's soccer team had plenty of chances to find the back of the net, but settled for a 0-0 draw in its home opener against Fordham Friday night at the UD Mini-Stadium.
Delaware (0-5-1) ended a five-game losing streak by blanking the Rams (1-4-1) for 110 minutes of action, as they out-shot Fordham 24-12 and stayed aggressive throughout. The Hens took their most shots since recording 25 in a 2005 loss to Rider.
Freshman midfielder Darren Christie (right) fired nine shots to lead the Blue Hens, who came up empty on several point-blank opportunities in the second half and two overtime periods.
Junior forward Tolu Olowolafe took five shots of his own, while junior goalkeeper Taylor Thames notched five saves to secure his first shutout of the season. The Hens collected 10 shots on goal and had several other good looks deflected near the box.
The Hens earned six corner kicks on the night.
UD hasn't played a 0-0 stalemate since Sept. 9 of last season, when the Blue Hens tied George Washington.
Delaware returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts St. Peter's at 7 p.m.
