Mike Yost Named CAA Men's Field Performer of the Week; Three Other UD Athletes Honored

DATE: April 20, 2005

RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware spring student-athletes continued to earn honors from the Colonial Athletic Association at an impressive rate Tuesday as four were honored as their respective CAA Performers of the Week.

Delaware had eight student-athletes honored this week as their sport's Player or Rookie of the Week and for the spring season have earned 19 CAA weekly awards in the sports of baseball, softball, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, men's tennis, women's tennis, and men's outdoor track and field.

Delaware athletes honored Tuesday were Men's Field Athlete of the Week Mike Yost (right), Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Week Alexa Dragonette, and Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week Jesse Carl and Jason Hanschmann.

Yost, a senior co-captain from Felton, DE (Lake Forest High School), led the Delaware men's track and field team to a third place finish at the Rider Invitational Saturday as he captured both the discus and hammer and was the Blue Hens' lone double champion. He won the discus throw with a career-best mark of 158-2 and captured the hammer competition with a career-best toss of 177-5. Both distances qualified him for the IC4A regionals in May. It marked the second straight week that Yost has won two events at a meet.

Dragonette, a freshman from Wyomissing, PA (Wilson High School), led the Delaware women's tennis squad to a 2-1 week as she won all five of her matches during the week. She posted singles wins over Georgetown's Kristen Drew and James Madison's Rebecca Vanderelest and was also 3-0 in doubles, winning two matches with Susan Pollack at No. 1 doubles and with Marissa Singer at No. 3 doubles. Dragonette improved to 11-6 in singles and 18-3 in doubles this season.

Carl, a junior from Northbrook, IL (Glenbrook North High School), and Hanschmann, a freshman from Palatine, IL (Palatine High School), won all three of their matches last week, including a pair of wins over CAA foes. The duo posted a pair of 8-4 victories and an 8-3 win to improve to 16-4 this season and extend their unbeaten string to six. The 16 wins are just two shy of the Delaware record set in 1973-74. Hanschmann also set a new UD single season wins record for a freshman with a 17-7 mark.

All three Delaware teams will be competing in their respective CAA Championships this week. The Delaware men's and women's track and field teams will take part in the CAA championships April 22-23 at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and the UD men's and women's tennis teams will take part in the CAA Tennis Championships April 21-24 at Huntington Park in Newport News, VA. The UD women are the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 Old Dominion in Friday's quarterfinals and the Delaware men are the No. 7 seed and will battle No. 2 William & Mary in Friday's quarterfinals.
