Nesbitt Captures 400m Hurdles for Blue Hens


ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Both the University of Delaware men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened the 2003 season with fourth place finishes at the Navy Invitational at Engram Field Saturday afternoon.

Host Navy took both team titles. In the men's competitions, Navy posted 204.5 points to outdistance Ohio University (161.5), Maine (144), and Delaware (120). The Navy women claimed victory with 193 points followed by Ohio (186), Maine (162), and Delaware (120). Complete results were not announced by Navy until Tuesday due to computer problems.

Delaware captured one first place finish on the day as Brandon Nesbitt captured the men's 400 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 55.3 seconds. The Blue Hen men also posted three other second place finishes in Phil Smiley in the 400 meters hurdles (55.6); Jerome Holder in the 110 meters hurdles (14.9); Nick Riordan in the triple jump (40-2 3/4); and Mike Yost in the hammer throw (161-10 1/2).

Yost was also third in the discus (142 1/2), Riordan was fifth in the long jump (20-6 1/4), and Holder was fifth in the 100 meters (11.4).

The Delaware women had three second place finishes as Daniella Price was second in the 100 meters (12.51), Tyechia Smith was second in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles (1:07.79), and Price and Smith joined Kristin Frustillo and Elizabeth Russell for a second place finish in the 4 x 100 meter relay (48.84). Erin Gemmill also posted two top four finishes as she was third in the 800 meters (2:18.18) and fourth in the 1,500 meters (4:55.35).
