Win Titles for Blue Hen Men
TOWSON, MD -- University of
Delaware track and field athletes picked up 10 first place
finishes, including eight by the Blue Hen women's team, at
the Towson University Open Saturday at Towson University
Stadium.
Highlighting the first place finishes for
the UD women was freshman Erin Gemmill (Penn
Manor/Lancaster, PA) who won the 800 meters in a school
record time of 2:13.84, breaking the previous Blue Hen
record of 2:14.86 by Sarah Cowles in 1994.
Other first place finishes for the UD
women were Laura Dietrich (Northeastern/York, PA) in
the triple jump (35-5 3/4); Liesje Cardillo (Bishop
Eustace/Marlton, NJ) in the long jump (18-6); Kristen
Salvatore (St. Mark's/Bear, DE) in the 200 meters
(26.15); Sarah Bochet (Trumbull/Trumbull, CT) in the
400 meter hurdles (1:04.13); and Kristen Frustillo
(Cardinal O'Hara/Newtown Square, PA) in the 400 meters
(59.22).
Winning titles for the Delaware men were
Mike Yost (Lake Forest/Felton, DE) in the discus
(140-4) and Matt Swierzbinski (Caesar Rodney/Wyoming,
DE) in the 5,000 meters (15:25.84).
Delaware athletes also had several
multiple top 10 finishes. For the UD women, Salvatore was
third in the 100 meters (12.89), Gena Carapezza
(Notre Dame/Ewing, NJ) was second in the discus (126-9) and
eighth in the javelin (100-8), Denise Brijbasi
(Suitland/Temple Hills, MD) was fifth in the triple jump
(32-5), seventh in the 100 meters (13.53), and 10th in the
long jump (15-9), Michelle Perno (Parkland/Bear, DE)
was third in the discus (119-4) and sixth in the shot put
(33-9 1/4), Jess Urbonas ( Rockville/Vernon, CT) was
fourth in the discus (114-9), fourth in the shot put (36-2
3/4), and seventh in the javelin (101-2), Jennie
Chiller (Sharon/Sharon, MA) was fourth in the hammer
(141-4) and eighth in the shot put (30-4 1/4), and Kerry
Van Riper (Bethlehem Central/Delmar, NY) was fifth in
the hammer (138-5) and shot put (35-6 3/4).
For the UD men, Yost also placed fifth in
the hammer (144-6) and shot put (44-6 3/4), Brandon
Jones (Pennsbury/Newtown, PA) was second in the 100
meters (10.86) and ninth in the 200 meters (22.81),
Jerome Holder (Woodbridge/Bridgeville, DE) was third
in the 110 meter hurdles (15.38) and fourth in the 400 meter
hurdles (55.36); Fred DePalma (Penns Grove/Salem, NJ)
was fifth in the javelin (175-6) and 10th in the shot put
(36-2 3/4), Ben Thuma (Northern York/Harrisburg, PA)
was fifth in the discus (130-7), sixth in the hammer
(130-11), and seventh in the shot put (41-9 1/4), and
Greg Barker (West/Cherry Hill, NJ) was sixth in the
discus (130-1) and seventh in the shot put (39-2
1/2).
