DiNozzi Places Sixth in Pole Vault; Hens Win Heat in 4 x 200 Relay

PHILADELPHIA - A sixth place finish by junior Jon DiNozzi in the men's Eastern pole vault and a 16th place finish by senior Aimee Alexander in the women's 5,000 meters highlighted the University of Delaware's individual performances at the annual Penn Relays this past weekend at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.

In the relay events, the Blue Hen women set school records and the Delaware men won its heat in the 4 x 200 meter relay.

DiNozzi (Fox Lane, NY HS/Middletown, DE) placed sixth overall in the pole vault with a leap of 15-3, finishing behind winner Scott Lundy of Cornell who vaulted to a height of 16-9 1/4. Alexander (Carmel/Stormville, NY) ran to a time of 17:02.98 to place 16th in the 5,000 meters. The race was won by Keene State's Mary Proulx in a time of 16:29.79. Also for the UD men, senior Mike Goodhart (Warwick/Lititz, PA) was 18th in the hammer throw with a toss of 171-2. Ohio State's Andrew Sauer won the event with a throw of 192-11.

The UD women competed in four relays, setting a school record in two of them. The sprint medley relay team of freshman Kristen Frustillo (Cardinal O'Hara/Newtown Square, PA), sophomore Kristen Salvatore (St. Mark's/Bear, DE), Tyechia Smith (McNair Academic/Jersey City, NJ), and freshman Erin Gemmill (Penn Manor/Lancaster, PA) placed second in its heat with a time of 4:08.0, breaking the previous school record of 4:16.91 by Nina Anderson, Kristin Sweeney, Amber MacNeill, and Kristen Robbins in 1998. George Mason won the heat in a time of 4:00.31.

Delaware also set a school record in the 4 x 200 as the team of Frustillo, freshman Liz Russell (Red Bank Regional/Little Silver, NJ), freshman Jen McDonald (Paul VI/Magnolia, NJ), and Salvatore placed eighth in a time of 1:45.64, breaking the previous UD standard of 1:46.4 by Laura Fauser, Trish Taylor, Sue Taylor, and Sue Tyler in 1981. South Carolina won the heat in a time of 1:34.78.

Also for the UD women, the 4 x 400 meter relay team of sophomore Rachel Schultz (Caeser Rodney/Dover, DE), Smith, freshman Sarah Bochet (Trumbull/Trumbull, CT), and Gemmill was sixth in a time of 4:00.80 (Monmouth won in 3:50.73) and the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Salvatore, junior Liesje Cardillo (Bishop Eustace/Marlton, NJ), Smith, and Frustillo was ninth in its heat with a time of 50.15 (Texas Tech won in 46.30).

For the Delaware men, the 4 x 200 meter relay team of senior Butch Patrick (Newark/Newark, DE), senior Brandon Jones (Pennsbury/Newtown, PA), senior Ed Montalvo (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, NJ), and junior Nate Irvin (Sussex Central/Millsboro, DE) won its heat in a time of 1:31.87 but did not advance to the finals.

Also, the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Patrick, Jones, Montalvo, and Irvin placed second in its heat in a time of 42.36 (Sherbrooke College won in 42.31) while the 4 x 400 relay team of sophomore Jay Pava (Monmouth Regional/Eatontown, NJ), sophomore Jerome Holder (Woodbridge/Bridgeville, NJ), Montalvo, and junior Brandon Nesbitt (Ewing/Trenton, NJ) was 11th in its heat with a time of 3:28.59 (Saint Joseph's won in 3:15.95).
